  1. Comenius 2007 – 09Alajor 14-18 May 2008Italy – CingoliLiceo linguisticoClass 2 DOMESTIC WASTE

  2. WASTE AT HOME On average, 2,5 kg is produced per day per person in the homes of the students of class 2A in Cingoli The average percentage (by mass) of different types of the waste produced in the students’ homes

  3. Most students do not separate waste at home Waste is not normally collected from students’ homes This is what happens to the waste from home: C=any treatments provided by the community F=any treatments carried out by individual families

  4. WASTE AT SCHOOL • Waste at school is separated • Waste is separated in the following categories: • Newspapers • Cardboard • Office paper • Plastic • Aluminium cans

  5. WASTE IN THE COMMUNITY • We dispose our waste in special containers in special places: • yellow containers for paper, • blue containers for plastic, • green containers for glass, • brown containers for organic waste, • special yellow containers for old clothes.

  6. These are the major issues concerning domestic waste in Cingoli: • No containers for the collection of aluminium, but the County Council organises house to house collection (Tuesday morning on request through a special green number). • In our province there are only two landfills Potenza Picena and Tolentino which will be completely full by October 2009. • There are no incinerators in Italy after the Seveso event in 1976 (people died due to explosion of incinerator and pollution caused).

  7. Actions taken by our local authority: • Reduce waste: a campaign to reduce packaging and convince people not to buy over packaged goods or disposable items. • Reuse waste: using organic waste as compost in gardens as fertilizer. • Recycle waste: Campaigning in schools from nursery school upwards making children and teachers aware of the importance of recycling. • Recover energy from waste: Converting wood shavings and prunings in order to produce fuel (trucioli/shavings).

  8. Policies put in place to improve waste management: • Local community authority : The creation of a special organization COSMARI (Consorzio Obbligatorio SMAltimento RIfiuti) which unites 57 municipalities in collecting solid and urban waste. • National or state government : In Progress • Organisations involved in reducing, reusing, recycling and recovering energy from domestic waste in our community and their involvement.

  9. Actions proposed by our class that the school should take to cut out on the amount of waste or to improve the management of school waste • The request for different containers collocated on every floor in the school. • The organization of meetings at school with an expert to make the students, teachers and parents more aware of these problems. • Eat less junk food. • Promoters towards a correct respect for the environment.
