  2. A note from Dr. Derenne and Dr. Hill Rates of eating disorders have skyrocketed and hospital admissions for eating disorders have doubled since before the pandemic. Between the isolation of the pandemic, mental health struggles, and more social media exposure, adolescents are particularly vulnerable for developing eating disorder symptoms. In 2021 the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP) declared a national emergency in child and adolescent mental health.

Eating disorders are the second deadliest mental illness with a mortality rate of 4-5 percent. The good news, however: eating disorders are very treatable with early detection and proper treatment. Unfortunately, most medical schools and residency programs don’t provide adequate education on eating disorders. With that said, pediatricians and primary care providers can learn vital basics to help better care for patients with eating disorders. Important Facts About Eating Disorders • Eating disorders are up 70%+ in kids as young as 7 since the pandemic began1 • Hospital admission rates have doubled 2,3 • Waitlists are up to 5 weeks at residential, PHP, and IOP settings 4 • In 2021, the American Academy of Pediatrics declared a national emergency in child and adolescent mental health 5 • 30 million Americans (10% of the population) will be affected by an eating disorder in their lifetime 6 • 5 million Americans will develop an eating disorder this year 7 • 80% of Americans will never receive treatment and less than 20% of those will receive evidence-based treatment that works 8
