  1. Undergraduate Research in Glass Science at Coe College: A National Model of ExcellenceSteven A. Feller, Coe College, DMR 0904615 Alkali borovanadates were studied as an extension of our work characterizing vanadium in oxide glasses. This is a large cooperative effort between the University of Warwick (UK), University of Manitoba (Canada), William Jewell College (MO) and Coe College (IA). We are characterizing the structure through NMR, ESR, Raman Spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. Concurrent physical property measurements are taking place as well. Our program in glass science is home to over twenty students a summer, mostly supported by NSF through this grant and our REU program. We have demonstrated that a four-year approach to undergraduate research is an excellent way to prepare future scientists for the nation. 51V NMR nutation spectra showing 2 V sites in glasses Shari Yosinski working on Coe’s electron microscope. She studied the structure of vanadate microspheres.

  2. Undergraduate Research in Glass Science at Coe College: A National Model of ExcellenceSteven A. Feller, Coe College, DMR 0904615 Coe students travelled widely for this research. They went to the Rutherford Appleton lab (neutron scattering), the University of Warwick (for solid state NMR), Japan for the Borate 6 conference, the University of Manitoba (for solid state NMR), and William Jewell College (for ESR). The 2009 Coe Playground of Science drew 1800 students and parents for an evening of science hosted by Coe’s Physics Club. We put on about 30 demonstrations and encouraged children to express their natural interest in science. Broader impacts: Coe Students at Fermilab in Nov. 2008 as part of the quadrennial Sigma Pi Sigma Congress for physics undergraduates. We gave several glass research papers there.
