  1. Some General Rules for Designing Good Survey Instruments

  2. Wording Questions • Principle5:Cleary communicate to all respondents the kind of answer that constitutes an adequate answer to a question. The easiest way to communicate to respondents what kind of answer to give is to provide a list of acceptable answer. (closed –ended question)

  3. Wording Questions • Example • When did you move to this community? • Possible answer: • When I was 16 • Right after I was graduated • In 1990 • ( can not be compared and analyzed)

  4. Wording Questions • Example • In what year did you move to this community? • How old were you when you move to this community?

  5. Wording Questions • Example • Why did you go to the doctor the last time? • Possible answer • I wasn’t feel well • My husband had been nagging me. And I decided it was time to go • Doctor had scheduled me to come back • To get a shot

  6. Wording Questions • Example • Why did you go to the doctor the last time? • Possible answer • I wasn’t feel well • My husband had been nagging me. And I decided it was time to go • Doctor had scheduled me to come back • To get a shot

  7. Wording Questions • Example • For what kind of health condition or problem, if any, were you going to see the doctor? provide list of possible answer • Was you last visit to doctor mainly because of a condition that you had for some time, mainly to find out about a condition that you only noticed, or just for general checkup, for no particular problem or condition?

  8. Wording Questions • Example • Where do you get most of you information about health? • Possible Answers • Reading • Newspaper • Media

  9. Wording Questions • Principle 5a: Specify the number of responses to be given to questions for which more than one answer is possible?

  10. Wording Questions • Example • What was it about the brand you bought that made you buy it rather than some other brand? • What was the most important feature of the brand you bought that made you buy it rather than other brand? • (eliminate the variability in #of answer given)

  11. Wording Questions • Example • Which of these form of exercise have you done in the past 30 days? • Swimming • Running • Biking • Skiing (use yes/ no question for each )

  12. Formatting Survey Instruments • Principle 6: Design survey instruments to make the tasks of reading questions, following instructions, and recording answers as easy as possible for interviewers and respondents.

  13. Formatting Survey Instruments 1. When question wording involve some kind of choice, such as when the interviewer has to decide on the exact word • (he/she) • Husband/ wife

  14. Formatting Survey Instruments 2. A clear distinction should be made between instructions to interviewers and the words that interviewers should read as part of the question • INSTRUCTION TO INTERVIWERS ARE WRITTEN IN CAPITAL LETTERS OR use shade area

  15. Formatting Survey Instruments 3. There should be a consistent convention to help interviewers deal with skips in the interview schedule. A1. On (reference date) were you working at a job for pay? 1[ ] Yes (SKIP TO A2) 2[ ] No

  16. Formatting Survey Instruments 3. There should be a consistent convention to help interviewers deal with skips in the interview schedule. A1. On (reference date) were you working at a job for pay? 1[ ] Yes 2[ ] No (SKIP TO A2)

  17. Formatting Survey Instruments 4. Conventions for recording answers should be consistent.

  18. Formatting Survey Instruments For Self-administered survey instruments • Make it obvious to respondents which question they are to answer and which ones they are to skip. (Try to minimize skips) 2. Make it as obvious as possible how to answer questions.

  19. Training Response Principle 7: Measurement will be better to the extent that people answering questions are oriented to the task in a consistent way. Three are areas to train respondents • Priorities or goals of the task • The data collection process and how to play the respondent role • The purpose or goals of any particular subpart of the survey

  20. Training Response Principle 7: Measurement will be better to the extent that people answering questions are oriented to the task in a consistent way. Three are areas to train respondents • Priorities or goals of the task • The data collection process and how to play the respondent role • The purpose or goals of any particular subpart of the survey

  21. Training Response This research by public health Service Act. It’s important for Public Health Service to get exact details on every question, even on those which may seem unimportant to you. This may take extra effort. Are you willing to think carefully about each question in order to give accurate information? *See Figure 4.6 p 101 in your text book for more detail
