  3. Summary This book is about important facts from the Revolutionary War from A to Z. Some of them are people, events, or places. If you have to make one of these A to Z books soon, don’t worry just look it up in this book. We’re 99% positive that you will find the information needed. The other 1% is that you will know it. So sit back and get ready to learn!

  4. We dedicate our book to… We dedicate our book toMrs. Corino, Mrs. Zuber and Mrs. Buren because they helped us SO, SO much looking for information, and reminding us to reread and check our mistakes.

  5. Did You Know Did you know the militia was an army that was made up of part time soldiers? Did you know the continental army had many problems, for example they had very little gunpowder and they didn’t have a lot of supplies? Did you know it took Britain 3 times to get to the top of Bunker Hill? Did you know the Revolutionary War took 8 years for the 13 colonies to win? Did you know that Ben Franklin was sent to France, so France would become the colonies first ally?

  6. A is for Ally An Ally is a partner or supporter. France was an important ally to the patriots because they fought along side the colonies. On the other hand, Germans were allies to Great Britain.

  7. B is for Boston Massacre The Boston Massacre was a bad shooting in Boston, Massachusetts on the night of March, 5 1770. The colonists were throwing snowballs at the Red Coats and the Red Coats shot and killed 5 innocent colonists.

  8. C is for the Crossing of the Delaware General Washington and his militia planning a sneak attack General Washington planned a sneak attack on the Hessians. It happened on December 25, 1775. The Crossing of the Delaware was the start of the battle of Trenton.

  9. D is for Declaration of Independence It was a document written by Thomas Jefferson and signed by 65 delegates. It was made to declare peace. Also to treat every one equal.

  10. E is for England England was fighting the 13 colonies. England had an irrational king named King George III. In addition, England's army's nickname was Lobster-backs and Red Coats.

  11. F is for France France was a great ally to the 13 colonies. In addition, Ben Franklin was sent to France to get France on their side. France hated Great Britain too.

  12. G is for George Washington George Washington was a brave man. He lead the militia to victory. But lastly he NEVER, EVER GAVE UP!!!

  13. H is for Hiding Hiding is another word for camouflage. Also, its easier to plan a sneak attack. Lastly, your opponent (which was Britain at the time) will not see you. As you can see, well actually you can’t see the soldier

  14. I is for Independence Independence is breaking away from Great Britain on July 4th. That’s why we celebrate Independence Day. Most people shoot red, white and blue fire works to celebrate.

  15. Thomas Jefferson was the 3rd president from 1801-1809. He was born in 1743 and died in 1826, as a result he was 83 years old. Thomas was a Farmer, lawyer, inventor, until the revolution. Also, did you know he wrote the Declaration of Independence in 1776? J is for Jefferson, Thomas

  16. K is for King George III This is King George III’s statue in New York getting taken down when the 13 colonies defeated the British King George III was born in 1738. His grandfather (George II) was king when George III’s dad died. So George III knew he will become king soon at age 12. 10 years later his grandfather died and it was his turn to take the thrown. He was a irrational king who over taxed the 13 colonies.

  17. L is for Lexington Lexington is in west Massachusetts. The battle of Lexington was the first battle of the revolution in April 1775. It was also known as the shot heard round the world. The general of the battle were for Great Britain; General Gage. For the colonies; Colonel Barrett and Parker. Shot heard round the world

  18. M is for Mercenary Mercenary is a soldier hired to fight for a foreign army. A lot of Germans were hired to fight for Great Britain. Despite the fact that the Colonies did not have mercenaries.

  19. N is for New York There were many battles that were located here. For example Fort Ticonderoga was fought here. There were many battles fought there but not all the battles were as important as some of them.

  20. O Is for Opposites Both sides of the war were fighting for there belief. The patriots were fighting for independence from Great Britain. And Great Britain’s army was fighting to keep control over the colonies.

  21. P is for Paul Revere He was a silver smith, an engraver, made false teeth, and eye glasses. Paul Revere out raced two British soldiers to warn Samuel Adams, John Hancock, and other important patriots. He yelled “The British are coming!! The British are coming!!” Everyone got ready.

  22. Q is for Quartering act This is when the British troops stayed in the colonists homes because they thought they needed extra protection. So they were responsible for feeding and paying them. They had to treat them like it was their home. But once it got farther into the act the colonists started to get angry.

  23. R is for Rum This item as used in the triangular trade. People would drink this as a beverage. This is what the triangular trade leads up to. Water is definitely better to drink. If you drink to much rum you can get very sick. This would be there beer which is how they can get sick.

  24. S is for Slavery Many people were being captured and were used as slaves. If you got captured and sold you would have to do whatever your owner said or else you would be punished.

  25. T is for Triangular Trade They would trade slaves for molasses and then molasses and other materials to make them into rum. Once the rum reaches Africa the trade starts all over again. Why would they capture a young baby a mother a father a boy or a girl? What would that do for that family? It would make them all upset and why would they want to do that.

  26. U is for United We the Americans have all the rights that Great Britain had. Even though Great Britain had a stronger army and more supplies the patriots got help from other patriots around the nation for supplies to make Cornwallis and his army surrender. Even though they were the under dogs they just kept their faith and fought for America.

  27. V is for Victory Victory was the goal for both sides. When it came time for the last battle the patriots were the stronger team which allowed them to win. They won because the Loyalists surrendered but a win is a win. The reason Cornwallis surrendered was because he knew there was no way out and why let some of his troops get killed and he didn’t just do it for himself but for the troops and their family's.

  28. W is for Weapons These were used to fight in war. Both sides of the war had their strengths but the Loyalists were stronger in their weapons department. At one point the British had more supplies until the patriots from all around the nation came to help.

  29. X is for Xavier Cathedral This is a church in New York City. It is very old and still today is in good condition. If you go inside of it I'm sure you will find an artifact from back during the revolutionary war. This is where all the soldiers that fought in the war were buried.

  30. Y is for Yorktown This battle was the most important out of all the battles. This was where Cornwallis surrendered his army because he knew there was no way out and he couldn’t afford to lose anymore troops from his army. This battle was where dreams came true for the patriots.

  31. Z is for Zero Zero is for the Hessian population at 9am. Which meant they had to be as quiet as can be. If they were loud they could be caught and some of them could be held as slaves.

  32. Important Numbers 8am- Hessian population was 39 officers. 9am-Hessian population after an hour is 0. 56- 56 People signed the Declaration of Independence. 1775- Is the year the Revolutionary War began. 1783- Is the year the Revolutionary war ended. 1- George Washington was the first president of the United States of America. 13- which was the amount of colonies.
