5th Grade Lesson modified by Kimberly O’Dell Original lesson can be found at Engineering is Elementary (www.eie.org)
  2. Challenge: Fadil wants to ship a plant from her home in India to her sister’s home in the United States. Design a shipping package for the plant.
  3. Constraints: The plant’s needs must be met: Water daily Little sunlight Time: Construction of prototype complete in 1 hour The package: Must be made from available materials Must withstand 4 days of shipping Dimensions cannot exceed: height (36 cm) length (31 cm) Width (31 cm)
  4. Students develop criteria for success Plant arrives alive No loss of leaves Minimum wilting, crushing, and/or tearing of leaves No spilt soil Leaves are still dark green
  5. Collecting initial data…
  6. Sketching a design…
  7. Constructing a prototype…
  8. Ready to test the prototypes..
  9. Our “mail carriers” carried the packages around the school. 2nd grade helpers 
  10. 4 days later… Success? Students collect more data Students compare the data sets Students discuss successful and unsuccessful designs in consideration of the design criteria and the data
  11. Writing across the curriculum… Abstract includes: An introduction explaining why this project is needed and how the information gathered will be used. Paragraphs detailing the constraints, criteria for success, an analysis of the data, and success of the design. A conclusion detailing how the information learned from the failure and success points of the design will be used to improve the design.
