Communication MajorBecause communication is a vital social phenomenon, the mission of the communication program at the University of Connecticut is to study and teach about communication with areas of specialization including interpersonal, persuasion, communication technology, nonverbal and media effects.It is our goal to pursue theoretically grounded research and to disseminate knowledge by publishing our research and by teaching.

Academic Advising in COMM • Your faculty advisor has limited advising hours per week. • Lauren Munyard and Jeff Flaherty are available every day. • Plan ahead and schedule an appointment to meet with him/her. To schedule advising appt: advapp.uconn.edu Be sure to select “Communication Sciences” from drop down menu. Walk in hours: Mon-Fri 3-4pm

  12. How to determine your advisor • Your advisor’s name and contact. • You will have two: • Faculty advisor • Academic advisor • You will have three if you are a double major

  15. How to determine your Holds Check to see if you have a HOLD. It could prevent you from registering! Check it a couple weeks AHEAD OF TIME!

  16. How to find your Advisement Report Your Name This hold says you need to see your advisor before the hold can be removed. Other holds may be from: Bursar’s Office, Library, Health Center, etc. You may click here for further info.

You need at least 45 credits at the 2000+ level (The “45 credit Rule”).

They contain content that is relevant to the Communication discipline but are not from the COMM department. • 3. They share a common curricular focus or theme or relate to specific career goals. • Please check here for a list of pre-approved topics and courses. • Related courses must be approved by your assigned advisor • Can be uniquely tailored to the needs of the student. • Students propose to the faculty advisor related courses that fit their future academic or career goals.

BEFORE YOU MEET WITH AN ADVISOR. • Get a copy of the green plan of study form (with year you entered CLAS). • Begin filling out form. • Use transcript and peoplesoft advisement report degree progress for your record of classes. • Fill out general education requirements you have completed. • Decide which ones you need. • Write down questions you have to discuss with advisor. • Think about your interest in the major • Do you want to focus on interpersonal, mass, new technology or other focus? • Decide what courses you want to take that sound interesting. • Think about your related area as described previously. • Once you have completed your POS form: • Drop it off at the COMM Advising Office, MONT 345 • If you need help, schedule an appt on: www.advapp.uconn.edu with Lauren or Jeff Dr. Farrar 2011

Successful Communication Majors • Take responsibility for their own progress • Keep track of paperwork and deadlines • Use PeopleSoft Degree progress • Know what is expected of them. • Know where to go for different types of help. • Plan ahead when requesting help • Know when deadlines are coming • Schedule meetings in advance • Do not give away your only copy of ANYTHING. • Keep good records.
