  1. Understanding Standards: Nominee Training Event Graphic Communication Higher – Advanced Higher

  2. Aims of the Day To support Nominees in their understanding of national standards by: • reviewing candidate evidence • discussing this evidence and associated Assessment Standards with colleagues • asking questions and seeking clarification about national standards

  3. Aims of the Day • To better understand the Advanced Higher Course Assessment Task (IACCA), how this is assessed and the national standard set. • To better understand the assessment of the Higher Course Component Assessment Task (IACCA).

  4. The role of the Nominee Nominees are colleagues selected by their authority to become the local point of contact. The role is important in supporting the new National Qualifications by: • Answering questions for colleagues in their authority • Supporting their authority by hosting CPD events • Ensuring that correct information is disseminated • Contacting Principal Verifiers (PVs) and Team Leaders (TLs) for clarification as and when required

  5. Lessons learned in 2015 -16 • Advanced Higher - width of brief. • Combined approach at Advanced Higher – what to be aware of. • Insist on quality work at all levels especially at Advanced Higher. • Possible misinterpretation of Advanced Higher marking scheme. • Evidence of retrospective planning at all levels. • Evidence of generous marking at all levels.

  6. Advanced Higher Project The project is worth 120 marks and represents 60% of the overall Course Award. The project is internally marked and externally verified. There are no project tasks assigned by the SQA. Candidates and Assessors should discuss an appropriate focus for the project.

  7. Advanced Higher Project A suitable project enables a candidate to access all marks and allow a “graphical solution” to be developed to solve a problem. Projects can focus specifically on Technical Graphics, Commercial and Visual Media Graphics, or a blend of both. Candidates can tailor a project to suit their future needs.

  8. Advanced Higher Project What should a project contain? • A project plan showing ongoing refinement – a chart of progress. • A Project Folio 20 A3-sized – the actual project. • ‘record of progress’ or reflective commentary. • copy of project presentation not exceeding 10 minutes in length • assessor notes which include detailed comments in support of marks.

  9. Advanced Higher Project Marks can come from either Commercial and Visual Media (CVMG) or Technical Graphics approaches. If candidates choose a project where both Technical Graphics and CVMG are required, the assessment judgement must be made on the strongest item of evidence – not both items added together.

  10. Advanced Higher Project Workshop 1 Task: You will have 40 minutes to complete this task. Using the sample provided, identify and discuss where marks can be allocated. Do not be afraid to have frank discussions. We will use this material to go through Standardisation and understand where marks have been awarded.
