  1. Modulations: Cinema for the Ear Items for discussion How have modernist experiments in music influenced the contemporary dance music scene? Think back to previous lecture and reading material. To what extent is DJ music, hiphop, rave etc. “revolutionary?” Think about some of the claims being made regarding the “power” of music as discussed in this film. How has technology changed the nature of musical creation and expression? Consider the points made by Neill and DJ Spooky. What do you think is happening to “creativity” within the context of this film and related discussions? Are current directions positive or negative? Again, refer to the readings as well Can you think of any recent trends or developments within the broad electronic music scene that are worth noting? How do they relate to what is presented in the film, which was made in 1998. Has anything changed? T what extent to these trends and developments relate to points brought up in the readings?
