  4. Background of the Vietnam War • After the end of WWII, the U.S. practiced a policy of “Containment”. • Containment was the theory that Communism must not be allowed to spread, and it was America’s job to stop it.

  5. Background of the Vietnam War • The Vietnam War began with President John F. Kennedy sending U.S. military advisors to South Vietnam in 1961 to help train the South Vietnamese Army. • After the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution in August of 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson escalated U.S. involvement in South Vietnam by sending U.S. ground forces into the country.
