Content, size, quality and state of availability of the digital material • Content: • Manuscripts, old prints, maps, small print, maps, sheet music, globes, photography, postcards, posters • Size: • circa 10-12 TB • Rough size distribution: • maps > manuscripts > small prints > old prits > sheet music National Széchényi Library – Directorate of E-Services, Department of E-library Services 5 2014.09.25.

Content, size, quality and state of availability of the digital material • Quality: • 300-600 dpi master images (legacy material excluded) • surrogates: mostly PDF and/or JPG compressed • Availability: • About 70% in organized storage • About 10% distributed online National Széchényi Library – Directorate of E-Services, Department of E-library Services 6 2014.09.25.

Storing digital content in the NSZL • Backup: • 15 TB digital storage facility (partially outsourced) • DMEK (=Digital Storage) managed by the E-Library Services • Stored content available only to staff members • Transfer to storage facility: 5 TB buffer • Data discovery: • In-house inventory database (INDIGO) and data-entry tool • limited descriptive metadata and shelf number • Concerns: • Data validation tool • Standard metadata formats National Széchényi Library – Directorate of E-Services, Department of E-library Services 7 2014.09.25.

Distributing digital content in the NSZL • Image Library: Hungarian Digital Image Library • http://kepkonyvtar.hu/ • Shared digitalized image repository of Hungarian Cultural Institutions • Collection • Software: outsourced development (PostgreSQL/JAVA applications based on JaDoX-server) • Metadata: • proprietary; • HUNMARC • Main challenges: • support discontinued • mixed provenience of content National Széchényi Library – Directorate of E-Services, Department of E-library Services 9 2014.09.25.

Distributing digital content in the NSZL • E-Library: Hungarian Electronic Library • http://mek.oszk.hu/ • Open access digital library • Subcollections by document type: • MEK (books), EPA (periodicals), DKA (images and illustrations) • Software: In-house development (PhP-MySQL) • Metadata: proprietary with limited HUNMARC/USMARC output • Main challenges: • mixed content due to lack of defined collection development strategy • sustainability issues • no access control (only public content) National Széchényi Library – Directorate of E-Services, Department of E-library Services 10 2014.09.25.

Distributing digital content in the NSZL • Special digital collection websites • Virtual display cases • two prominent examples (manuscripts) • Bibliotheca Corviniana Digitalis (http://www.corvina.oszk.hu/) • Written Heritage (http://nyelvemlekek.oszk.hu/) • At least 50 different such sites • Challenges: • Different technological backgrounds • Adiminstrative rights and responsibilities are non-transefrable between departments • Huge differences in scope • No standard metadata outputs National Széchényi Library – Directorate of E-Services, Department of E-library Services 11 2014.09.25.

Describing digital content in the NSZL • Data repositories of online services • Integrated System: AMICUS (LibriVision web-client) • Metadata: HUNMARC • Retrospective conversion is underway • Sufficient integration with Digital Library software • Challenges: • MARC21 data exchange • Application of cataloguing rules in special collections • E-Library and Digital Image Library • Proprietary metadata-schemes (outdated qualified DC-schemas) • No authority data • Main challenge: • Unified search interface • Up-to-date metadata exchange format for all databases National Széchényi Library – Directorate of E-Services, Department of E-library Services 12 2014.09.25.

The future digital content in the NSZL • Imminent task: • Introduction of a new Digital Repository System for the whole collection • With the following in mind: • Up-to date metadata exchange formats (MARC21, RDF, RDA) • Authority data axchange (e.g. Viaf.org) • Updating existing data-exchange relations (EUROPEANA, TEL, regional databases) • Integration of all collections and sub-collections • Description rules need to be implemented for special document types • Unified interface for all digital content • With special display options for special collections (e.g. virtual exhibitions) National Széchényi Library – Directorate of E-Services, Department of E-library Services 13 2014.09.25.

The NSZL and the Manuscriptorium-project • Pracitcal issues • Old print sample data entry test • Data entry is allowed without authentication • Should the record be usable? • or • Is this only a test scenario? • Structure & Images • Page pagination schema was not accepted • Natural order: two pages per page image option omitted pages • Export • Document description valid • Document structure successfully analyzed, yet: • Export: 0 kb size ‘noname.xml’ file exported • Attempting to import XML-file captured from display: • Empty alert screen National Széchényi Library – Directorate of E-Services, Department of E-library Services 15 2014.09.25.

The NSZL and the Manuscriptorium-project • Questions • Is the current ENRICH schema implented in the M-Tool? • What document types the can be ingested via M-Tool in the future? • Are there going to be separate how-to guides for each document type? • Notes • The M-Tool is going to be used by curators, not IT-staffers. • Guides need to be provided at their comfort level. • In case of cooperation, the Department of E-Services will be involved at the level of Structure & Images National Széchényi Library – Directorate of E-Services, Department of E-library Services 17 2014.09.25.
