In the counter argument paragraph (your 4th paragraph) you need to address (discuss) what your opponents argueOR what obstacles stand in the way of solving your issue. • What Your Opponents Argue: 2-3 pieces of evidence supporting your opponent’s arguments with explanations of why you believe they are wrong. • Obstacles: 2-3 pieces of evidence explaining obstacles to your issue/topic with an explanation of why these obstacles are hard to solve. Counter Argument

What Your Opponents Argue: There are those who argue that… (opponents argument) … because… (why they argue their point)… Example: There are those who argue that abortion should be legalbecause it is a woman’s right to her body and it can spare children from lives of pain and suffering. Obstacles: There are many obstacles that stand in the way of solving/ending … (your issue)… Example: There are many obstacles that stand in the way of ending abusive relationships. Counter Argument Topic Sentence

Write your topic sentence about your first supporting argument (using a transition word first!) • State your first piece of evidence to support it • EXPLAIN your first piece of evidence • State your second piece of evidence to support it • EXPLAIN your second piece of evidence • State your third piece of evidence to support it • EXPLAIN your third piece of evidence • Give an EXPLANATION of why your evidence overall supports your argument in this paragraph • Write a closing sentence to the paragraph.
