  3. The Spirit-Empowered King’s Gospel Mission • A Summary of His Mission (6:1a–c) • The assertion of the Spirit’s presence (61:a) • Who is he? • The arm of the LORD. Isa 59:15–21. “And as for me, this is my covenant with them,” says the LORD: “My Spirit that is upon you, and my words that I have put in your mouth, shall not depart out of your mouth, or out of the mouth of your offspring, or out of the mouth of your children’s offspring,” says the LORD, “from this time forth and forevermore” (Isa 59:21).

  4. The Spirit-Empowered King’s Gospel Mission • A Summary of His Mission (6:1a–c) • The assertion of the Spirit’s presence (6:1:a) • Who is he? • The arm of the LORD. Isa 59:15–21. • God’s servant-person. Isa 42:1, 3. Behold my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my Spirit upon him; he will bring forth justice to the nations…. 3 A bruised reed he will not break, and a faintly burning wick he will not quench; he will faithfully bring forth justice. • The coming king. Isa 11:1–2, 4. There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit. 2 And the Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD…. 4 But with righteousness he shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth.

  5. The reason for the Spirit’s presence (61:bc) • Who are “the poor” or “afflicted”? • Isa 11:2, 4. And the Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD…. 4 But with righteousness he shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth. • Isa 29:18–21. In that day the deaf shall hear the words of a book, and out of their gloom and darkness the eyes of the blind shall see. 19 The meek shall obtain fresh joy in the LORD, and the poor among mankind shall exult in the Holy One of Israel. 20 For the ruthless shall come to nothing and the scoffer cease, and all who watch to do evil shall be cut off, 21 who by a word make a man out to be an offender, and lay a snare for him who reproves in the gate, and with an empty plea turn aside him who is in the right.

  6. Isa 32:7.  As for the scoundrel—his devices are evil; he plans wicked schemes to ruin the poor with lying words, even when the plea of the needy is right. • Matt 9:12–13. But when he heard it, he said, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. 13 Go and learn what this means, ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.’ For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.” “Who are the poor? Those who are so broken by life that they have no more heart to try; those who are so bound up in their various addictions that liberty and release are a cruel mirage; those who think that they will never again experience the favor of the Lord, or see his just vengeance meted out against those who have misused them; those who think that their lives hold nothing more than ashes, sackcloth, and the fainting heaviness of despair. These are they to whom the Servant/Messiah shouts ‘Good news!’” (Oswalt, The Book of Isaiah, Chapters 40–66, 564)

  7. Isa 32:7.  As for the scoundrel—his devices are evil; he plans wicked schemes to ruin the poor with lying words, even when the plea of the needy is right. • Matt 9:12–13. But when he heard it, he said, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. 13 Go and learn what this means, ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.’ For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.” • Matt 5:3–5. Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. 5 Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

  8. What is the good news? • Isa 40:9–11 • Isa 52:7–10 • Isa 61:1–3 • Definition: The reigning God saves and satisfies believing sinners through Christ’s life, death, and resurrection.
