  1. Math Workbook Solving Equations By: Abbie Adirzone

  2. One – Step Equations • GOAL: Try and get the variable by itself • How To Solve An Addition Equation • Free Kick: remember to do the same to BOTH sides! • First Pass: Get the number that the variable is being added too, and subtract that number from itself which it cancels it out then subtract the same number to the other side. • Second Pass: You must check your solution or a serious penalty could happen! • Here Is A Practice Shot • x + 5 = -4 • - 5 - 5 -4 – 5 • _____ ____ -4 + -5 • x = -9 -9

  3. One – Step Equations • How To Solve A Subtraction Equation • Free Kick: Remember to do the same to both sides! • First Pass: Get the number that is being subtracted from the variable and subtract it from itself and the other side. • Second Pass: Check the answer, and if it is correct than you scored a goal! • For these problems you must add a line change the sign which means that when you are trying to subtract you have to add a line which means to take the operation sign and either make it an addition sign and then make the number after the operation sign the opposite value (if it is a negative then make it a positive and if it is a positive than make it a negative). • Here Is A Practice Shot • x - -8 = 32 • + -8 + -8 • ____ ____ 32 + -8 X = 24 2 32 - 8 _______ 2 4

  4. One – Step Equations Practice • 1. x + 6 = -11 2. x - -8 = 32 • 3. a – 16 = -3 4. p + 7 = 15 • 5. w + -2 = 8

  5. One – Step Equations Word Problems WriteAn Equation And Solve. • Megan has 12 pairs of old cleats in her closet. Rachel has 5 more pairs than Megan. How many cleats does Rachel have? • Tim has a collection of soccer trophies. He has a total of 35. That is 4 trophies less than Joe has. How many trophies does Joe have? • Olivia has 8 pairs of shin-pads. That is 3 more than Lauren has. How many shin-pads does Lauren have?

  6. Two – Step Equations • How To Solve A Multiplication And Division Equation • Here are some assists to help you! • First Pass: You must divide your problem in half by the equals sign so than your problem is organized. • Second Pass: Spot the variable and circle it • Third Pass: Locate the number next to the operation sign. Then get rid of it by using the opposite operation. • Fourth Pass: Divide or Multiply (which ever is needed) • Also, for multiplication and division you have to see if the number you are multiplying or dividing is negative or positive. Only because if the numbers are both positive than the outcome will be positive. Then if the numbers are positive and negative then the outcome is negative. If the numbers are negative and negative the outcome will be positive. • Here Is A Practice Shot • 2x + 7 = -15 • - 7 - 7 -15 – 7 11____ • _____ ______ -15 + -7 2 | 22 • 2x = -22 15 -2 • _____ ____ + 7 __ • 2 2 _______ 02 • -22 - 2 • x = -11 _____

  7. Two – Step Equations Practice Solve. • x 2m – 4 = 2 • 6 -8 = 10 • -3 = -3 + x 6m – 14 = 16 • 2 • x • 8 - 10 = -2

  8. Two – Step Equations Word Problems Write An Equation And Solve. • You buy 2 new TV’s to watch the World Cup. Yet you also buy a new sofa. The insurance for the sofa is $235 and the total is $265. How much were the TV’s. • The referee got $30 for coming to the game. He gets paid $5 an hour. He gets a total of $50. How many hours long did he referee the soccer games? • Coach gave Amy $5. For every pass she gets, Coach gives her $5. The total amount Amy received was $95. How many passes did Amy get?

  9. Answer Key • 1. x = -17 1. x = 108 • 2. x = 24 2. m = 3 • 3. a = -19 3. 0 = x • 4. p = 8 4. m = 5 • 5. w = 6 5. x = 64 • 1. c = 17 1. p = $15 • 2. p = 39 2. p = 4 • 3. p = 5 3. p = 18 • One – Step Two - Step • First five are practice • and last • three are word problems.
