1. Deptford Green School presents… Black History Month

2. Samuel Coleridge-Taylor Samuel Coleridge-Taylor was born on 15th August 1875 in Holborn Central London. He was Professor of Composition at Trinity College of Music and believed in the mixture of African sounds with traditional classic music. He fought racial prejudice all his short life. Sadly, Coleridge at the young age of 32.

3. October • October is Black history month • It’s a chance to remember, celebrate and admire the achievements of black people throughout Britain and the wider world. • However, we should remember and celebrate the achievements of black people every day of the year, not just in October.

5. Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz • She is the grandmother of Queen Victoria, and the great-great-great-great grandmother of the current Queen of the United Kingdom, Elizabeth II. • Charlotte's mother, Elizabeth Albertine, was the illegitimate daughter of Abram Petrovich Gannibal, and that Charlotte could therefore have been one-quarter Black.

7. Benjamin Banneker • Originally known as Banna Ka or Bannakay. • Born November 9th 1731. • Died October 9th 1806. • Benjamin was taught to read and do simple arithmetic by his grandmother and by a Quaker schoolmaster, who changed his name to Banneker. • Africa American, Mathematician, Astronomer, Clockmaker and Publisher.

8. Garrett A. Morgan • Born 1877 in Kentucky USA • He invented the traffic lights system we have to day and was the first man to own a car in his district • He also invented smoke protectors for firefighters.

9. John Love, William Purveys and Lee Barrage • Think of a world without newspapers, magazines or books • Well, John Love invented the pencil sharpner, William Purveys invented the fountain pen and Lee Barrage the type writing machine

10. James Cleveland "Jesse“ Owens • Born September 12th 1913. • Died March 31st 1980. • Was an American field and track athlete. • Participated in the 1936 summer Olympics in Berlin and Germany where he won 4 gold medals. • For 100 metres, 200 metres, long jump and as part of the 4x100 metres relay team.

11. Mo Farah Jessica Ennis • Is a twin that came to the UK in 1991 when he was 8 • Who was born in Somalia and could speak no English when he arrived • He is proud of his Somalian heritage and Muslim religion • Double Olympic Champion 2012 • Jamaican father who was a painter and decorator and mother was born in Derbyshire • In her first competition aged 11 she won a pair of trainers • Won 6 Gold medals throughout her career so far • Heptathlon Olympic Champion 2012

12. Theo James Walcott Lewis Hamilton • English footballer of Jamaican descent. • Most expensive 16 year old in the history of British football (Bought for £5m which is rising to a possible £12m). • Youngest ever Arsenal player to appear in a European competition. • He is a British formula one driver and he started racing karts at the age of 8. • European karting champion in 2000 with maximum points. • At 14 Lewis was signed to the McLaren driver development support programme.

13. Serena Jameka Williams Venus Ebony Starr Williams • Born September 26th 1981. • American former world No.1 ranked female tennis player. • Has won twenty-three Grand Slam titles and an Olympic gold medal in women's doubles. • She is the last player, female or male, to have held all four Grand Slams at the same time. • An American tennis player. • Venus holds the record for the fastest serve ever recorded by a female in a main draw match (129mph). • She has won nineteen Grand Slam titles.

14. Nelson ‘Madiba’ Mandela • Nelson Mandela was the first democratically elected, President of South Africa. • “Education is the worlds most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world ” – Nelson Mandela

15. Who had a Dream? • Martin Luther King, Jr • Born January 15th 1929. • Assassinated April 4th 1968. • A main leader of the American Civil Rights Movement. • King was the youngest man to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964.

16. Rosa Parks • African American civil rights activist. • December 1st, 1955 Rosa Parks became famous for refusing to obey bus driver James Blake’s order that she should give up her seat. • This started the Montgomery Bus Boycott, one of the largest movements against racial segregation.

17. David Lammy MP • David Lammy MP, Minister for Skills, is one of two black Ministers in Gordon Brown’s government. • He is also the Member of Parliament for Tottenham.

18. The Hon. Mrs Justice Dobbs • Dame Linda Penelope Dobbs QC, is the first black person to sit as a High Court judge. She says she will be "the first of many". • In England and Wales there are just nine black circuit judges amongst the 623.

19. Barack Hussein Obama • The first black President of the United States of America.

20. Mary Jane Seacole • Born 1805. • Died May 14th 1881. • Was a mixed-race British nurse born in Jamaica. • Taught herbal remedies and folk medicine by her mother. • An expert at dealing with Cholera. • She heard about the terrible conditions of the Crimean War and moved to London to volunteer as a nurse.

27. Naomi Campbell Iman • Naomi is an English supermodel, actress, singer, and author of Jamaican/Chinese descent. • By August 1988, she had appeared on the cover of the French Vogue as that publication's first black cover girl. • Most influential SUPER model of all time. • "Iman Cosmetics" products for women in colour. • Spokesperson for " Keep a child Alive" • Muse for designers world wide.

28. Sir Trevor McDonald OBE • Trevor was Britain's first black news anchor. • He is originally from Trinidad. • McDonald presents his ITV News at Ten.

29. Halle Berry Dorothy Dandridge • (November 9, 1922–September 8, 1965) • Dorothy was an American actress. • She was the first African American to be nominated for the Academy Award in the Best Actress category. • The third African American woman to receive a nomination in any category overall (after Hattie McDaniel and Ethel Waters). • Halle was awarded an Academy Award for Best Actress; she made history by becoming the first African American woman to ever receive a Best Actress Academy Award for her role in the film Monster’s Ball. • Is an Academy Award-winning American actress.

30. Thandie Newton • Thandie is an English BAFTA Award-winning actress. • According to Newton, her mother is a Zimbabwean Shona Princess. • She was raised in Zambia and Penzance, England, and educated at Downing College, University Of Cambridge.

31. Ozwald Boateng • Ozwald is a fashion designer. Born in Ghana in the late 1960s and brought up in north London, He attended Highgate Wood School. • Boateng's many clients include James Bond, Will Smith, Laurence Fishburne, Jamie Foxx, Samuel L. Jackson, Keanu Reeves, and Mick Jagger.

32. Hattie McDaniel • Hattie was an American actress. She was the first black performer to ever win an Academy Award. • She won the award for Best Supporting Actress for her role of Mammy in Gone with the Wind (1939).

33. Josephine Baker • Is one of the world's most beloved entertainers. • Singer, Dancer and Actress. • Also noted for her commitment in the Civil Rights Movement in North America • After retiring she adopted her ‘Rainbow Tribe’, 12 orphans of different ethnicities and nationalities

34. Malorie Blackman • An award winning British author of literature and television drama for young adults and children. • Born February 1962. • Uses science fiction to explore and explain social and ethical issues. • Written over more than 50 books and a television script and a stage play. • Has won more then 15 awards.

35. Benjamin Obadiah Iqbal Zephaniah • Born April 15th 1958. • British Rastafarian. • A writer and Dub poet. • He is well known in contemporary English literature - Face, Gangster Rap and Refugee boy.

36. Jennifer Hudson Jake Nava • Stared as Effie White in the 2006 musical film Dreamgirls, for which she won an Oscar, a Golden Globe, a BAFTA, a SAG Award and two BET Awards. • The first African American singer, to grace the cover of Vogue magazine. • Acclaimed Music video director with a total number of 63 videos under his belt. • Jake Nava has worked on a number of music videos such as: • Beyonce ft. Jay-z – “Crazy in love” • Kelis – “Milkshake” • Usher – “Burn” • Britney Spears –”My Prerogative” • Mariah Carey - "Shake It Off” • Beyonce and Shakira - “Beautiful Liar”
