Background The purpose of higher education is training of specialists with a high level of professional competence who are capable of continuous expansion and increasing the sum of their knowledge and skills and able to lifelong learning 1 2 The doctor is able to solve efficiently his/her professional problems provided that the subjective personal welfare, and active and curious attitude to his/her activity 2 3

Motivation development for learning and professional activities Focusing on self-learning and fulfillment, emotional attractiveness of learning, understanding of their own abilities and aspirations An important condition for being mature in the profession is its acceptance by a student, awareness of its meaning, practicable aims, alternatives and their consequences Motivation A crucial element of the educational process in medical universities is to improve students' motivation for learning and professional activity taking into consideration its involvement in daily routine of the modern doctor and higher social significance for development of personality and society

Organization of independent learning including searching creative explorations Aims and tasks of independent learning: • Profound knowledge of independently investigated problems; • Information management skills development (ability to search and analyze the information from different sources); • Interest development for learning, cognitive and research activities. Various forms of independent learning for students at the Department of Pedagogy and Psychology: • tasks for repetition, knowledge keeping and broadening, and training of skills on the given topic (e.g. to make a PowerPoint presentation, to compile a glossary, to prepare tasks on the topic associated with the practical work of a doctor); • tasks for new material perception offered to perform before starting a new particular topic. Such tasks are often used to check a rate of learned material.

  8. Numeric and rating system Numeric and rating system is exploited for evaluation of students’ academic achievements in all disciplines taught at the Department. Actual experience with this system has allowed to indicate the following advantages: • Provide a comprehensive assessment of student learning; • Increase the level of activity during classes, keep discipline, improve attendance of lectures and practical classes; • Improve objectivity in assessment of students learning by a teacher

Monitoring forms as means for learning motivation improvement and professional activities Awareness of the real meaning for teaching/learning and professional activities; Independent learning work organization Formation of stable positive attitude to the medical profession Numeric and rating system Awareness of the link between teaching/learning and professional competences and motivation to the learning Active teaching/learning methods Cultivate motivation to the further personal and professional development

Differences in emotional component expression before studying a discipline and at the moment of its completion Significant increasing of motivation expression in knowledge gain (р=0,009) and profession mastering (p=0,0162) has been revealed. Meaningful distinctions amid motivation indices for diploma getting have not been noticed.
