  1. Physical Changes or. Chemical Changes How can you tell?

  2. Physical Property • A property that can be observed without changing the substance……… • Stretching • Measuring (mass, volume, density, ) • Molding • Breaking • Color • Texture

  3. Physical Change • A change in any physical property of a substance, but not in the substance itself….

  4. Example of a Physical Change • An example of a physical change occurs when making a baseball bat. Wood is carefully crafted into a shape which will allow a batter to best apply force on the ball. Even though the wood has changed shape and therefore physical properties, the chemical nature of the wood has not been altered. The bat and the original piece of wood are still the same substance.

  5. Chemical Properties • Chemical properties describe HOW substances can form NEW substance. • Rusting • Tarnishing • Combustibility • Flammability

  6. Examples of Chemical Properties

  7. Chemical Change • The change of one substance into another substance

  8. Signs of a chemical change • An odor is produced • Change in Temperature • Change in Color • Formation of Bubbles • Formation of a solid (Precipitate)

  9. PHYSICAL OR CHEMICAL CHANGE? • In each picture, a change is or has occurred. • Raise your letter “P” if you think the picture depicts a Physical Change. • Raise your letter “C” if you think the picture depicts a Chemical Change.
