  1. MDPTSeptember 2010 Mentors & school-based days

  2. School-based days • The MDPT course includes 10 school-based days when you will have tasks to complete in school. • These tasks will be introduced on IOE days and your school mentor should facilitate your carrying out each of the tasks in school. • Most of these tasks involve working with pupils so you will need to plan them for dates when a suitable group of pupils is available and when your scheme of work will allow you to do the task. • Note that in some cases the work with pupils may need to take place over several lessons. In these cases we would expect you to be able to fit the task in with a class you normally teach. The allocation of a school-based day indicates that you will require this amount of time to plan and prepare the lessons and to reflect on and evaluate the outcomes. • School-based Days are better appraised by your mentor, who knows the context of your school, than by university-based tutors.

  3. The Mentor’s role The Principal of your school should have confirmed that a member of the school staff will be allocated to you as a mentor. Please ask your mentor to send an email to Tim (t.jarvis@ioe.ac.uk) headed MDPT mentor hello so we know his/her name. • The named mentor will be responsible for ensuring that : • mathematics teaching of at least one class of children age 11 or above is timetabled during the course. • in the face of inevitable school pressures, the time is kept available for attendance at IOE-based days and for execution of school-based work. • pupils, classes or teachers who will enable the collection of experiences and data needed for completion of the school-based tasks are available. • The mentor will also • facilitate professional discussion of the mathematical and pedagogical issues that are emerging as important for the participant during the course. • give brief feedback to you on your Dialogue Notebook for the school-based days, which you can then give to IOE tutors.
