ANEROXIA NERVOSA • Affect anyone of any gender or age • Affects young women in their late teens and early twenties (majority) • about 90-95% are girls or women • .5-1% are American women suffering • 5-20% of individuals struggling will die • Has one of the highest death rates of any mental health condition • Starts in the early to mid-adolescence

  4. Anorexia Nervosa- Warning Signs • Dramatic weight loss • Inadequate food intake • Refusal to eat certain foods • Frequent comments about feeling fat or overweight • Anxiety about gaining weight • Denial of hunger

  5. Anorexia Nervosa- Warning Signs • Development of food rituals • Eating foods in certain orders, excessive chewing, and/or rearranging food on a plate • Excuses to avoid mealtimes • Excessive exercising • Withdrawal from friends and activities • Loss of menstrual cycle (Amenorrhea)

  6. Anorexia Nervosa- Warning Signs • Reduction of bone density • Osteoporosis • Muscle loss and weakness • Atrophy • Severe Dehydration • Fainting, fatigue, overall weakness • Dry hair/skin and hair loss • Suppressed immune system or immune dysfunction

Bulimia NervosaWarning Signs • Affect anyone of any gender or age • Affects 1-2% of adolescents and young adult women • 80% are female • People suffering appear to be of average body weight • Frequently associated with symptoms of depression and changes in social interaction • Risk of death from suicide or medical complications

Bulimia NervosaWarning Signs • Evidence of binge eating • Evidence of purging behaviors • Frequent trips to the bathroom after meals, signs or smells of vomiting, presence of wrappers or packages of laxatives or diuretics • Unusual swelling of the cheeks or jaw area (chipmunk cheeks) • Calluses on the back of the hands and knuckles from self-induced vomiting

  9. Bulimia NervosaWarning Signs • Discoloration or staining of the teeth • Withdrawal from usual friends and activities • Electrolyte imbalance • irregular heart beats • possible heart failure and death • dehydration and loss of potassium and sodium • Rupture of the esophagus

Binge Eating Warning Symptoms • Affect anyone of any gender or age • Effects 1-5% of the general population • Affect women slightly more then men • 60% of women; 40% of men • People who struggle with BED can be normal or heavier than average weight • Binge Eating disorder often associated with Bulimia Nervosa

  11. Binge Eating Warning Symptoms • Consuming very large amounts of food • Feeling out of control during the binge eating episodes • Strong feelings of shame or guilt regarding the binge eating • Eating when not hungry, eating to the point of discomfort, or eating alone

  12. Binge Eating Health Risks • High blood pressure • High cholesterol levels • Diabetes mellitus • Gallbladder disease • Musculoskeletal problems

  13. Anorexia Athletica • Type of Anorexia Nervosa and not common enough for statistics • Also know as Compulsive exercising • Mostly in teens • Concerned about their weight or worries about appearance • Weight loss over 5 percent of their normal body weight

Anorexia Athletica • Cut back on calories in diet • Restrict their diet to only “healthy” foods • Moves around activities to work out • Defensive of their exercise behavior • Never satisfied with athletic accomplishments • Acts annoyed if they do not get to work out • May show signs of an eating disorder
