Financial Statements Key terms • 10KAn annual report, required by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), that gives a comprehensive summary of a public company's performance. • 10QA quarterly report mandated by the United States federal Securities and Exchange Commission to be filed by publicly traded corporations. • accountingThe process of identifying, measuring and communicating economic information to permit informed judgements and decisions by users of the information. (definition by the American Accounting Association) • Accounting EquationThe "basic accounting equation" is the foundation for the double-entry bookkeeping system. For each transaction, the total debits equal the total credits. • amortizationThe reduction of loan principle over a series of payments. • balance sheetA summary of a person's or organization's assets, liabilities and equity as of a specific date. • bankruptcyA legally declared or recognized condition of insolvency of a person or organization. • budgetAn itemized summary of intended expenditure; usually coupled with expected revenue. • calendar yearThe amount of time between corresponding dates in adjacent years in any calendar. • capital surplusA balance sheet item under shareholders' equity.
