  1. This summer, study along the Georgia coast! BIOLOGICAL OCEANOGRAPHY SPECIAL TOPICS IN BIOLOGY, BIOL 4490 Maymester May 14th to May 25th 2007 Course Description: This maymester course utilizes faculty and facilities at the Skidaway Institute of Oceanography (SKIO) to provide students with a basic understanding of coastal ecosystems and to introduce them to current research topics in marine science. Students will investigate the interaction between physical/chemical factors and marine organisms by examining spatial and temporal changes along a coastal gradient from offshore on the continental shelf to inshore within the estuary. Introductory lectures, labs, and readings at Kennesaw State University during the first 2 days of the course (8am-5pm) will introduce students to basic concepts in oceanography. Students will spend the next 8 days living and working on the SKIO campus at Skidaway Island where they will be instructed by various SKIO faculty, working both in research laboratories and in the field (including an offshore research cruise on SKIO’s state-of-the-art research vessel, the R/V Savannah). Two final days at Kennesaw State will provide opportunity for wrap-up and preparation of a final research paper. Prerequistes: Chemistry 1212, Ecology (Biol 3370) and one semester of college physics, or permission of the instructor. Additional course fee: $90 assessed for housing, plus the cost of some meals.Credit hours: 4 hours upper level Biology. This academically rigorous course will demand long hours over 12 consecutive days.Lead Instructor: Dr. Joseph Dirnberger, KSU Department of Biology and Physics, Office 338 Science Bldg.
