  1. The New Era of Information in Transportation Our Integrated Future The path to a Smarter City Tip Franklin Director, Business Development

  2. Points of Discussion • The Road to Success • Understand Our Challenge(s) • Using Data Efficiently • Understand the Relationships • A Smart City Approach Agenda

  3. The Road to Success Smart Information for a Sustainable World

  4. Focus on the challenge – not the buzz words Integrated DSS Understand the Challenges Understand the Data Understand the Systems Integration Smart Transport • Smart City – its on the horizon • Great Potential – to get there we must focus on • Managing data • Integrating disparate systems • Managing the problems that occur • Providing a management overview – Dashboards • Achieving significant cost savings • Aiding the environment • But there are some challenges • This is an evolutionary cycle – not revolutionary • Each of the above – becomes a stepping-stone to deliver Smart City • Focusing today on the day-to-day problems and finding innovative solutions will provide the catalyst for getting to the Smart City • Smart City cannot happen in one giant leap – The Wright brothers didn’t develop the 747

  5. A Smart City is a system of systems Energy Mobility Mass Public Transport Smart Grid ElectricVehicles Gas Distribution TrafficManagement Smart Metering Renewable Energy Tolling & Congestion Charging Integrated Management Platform Control Center(s) Efficient Homes Public Lighting Public Safety Efficient Buildings Education Healthcare Public Services StormwaterMgmt Buildings & Homes Water Distribution Mgmt Water

  6. Understand our Challenge(s) Smart Information for a Sustainable World

  7. Traveler Problem Statement • Daily traveler information is at best sporadic. • Integrated multi-modal information is rarely available. • Much of the data is insufficient, incomplete and untimely. • Service providers have limited access to real-time data. • Rarely do systems provide any useful transit information. • Generally only freeway routes are covered. • Travelers have to search for information to assist them in making decisions The requirement for personalized, location aware, accurate, real-time and predictive multi-modal information presents perhaps one of the biggest challenges for state agencies to date – Couple this with rapidly changing technology, and the equation would appear to be all but impossible to solve.

  8. Agency Problem Statement • Facing worst budgetary constraints since the 30’s • Limited Integration between systems • Stove-piped approach – limiting efficiency • Demand for timely information rising exponentially • Not able to maintain status-quo, let alone meet the changing needs of technology • Politically charged environment • Emerging network management strategies such as HOT/managed lanes, Congestion charging, etc. Agencies simply have inadequate systems, tools, dataand therefore information to fully cover their network, let alone the tools to be able to disseminate accurate, timely and useful information to the traveling public.

  9. Using Data Efficiently Smart Information for a Sustainable World
