  2. Two NIOSH-funded Projects • Needs assessment • Curriculum development and training • Walgreens curriculum and TOT • Generic curriculum and TOT

Background Information • 4.5 million individuals with DD in the U.S. • 30% of working-age adults with DD are employed in segregated workshops or in mainstream employment, often with a job coach. • Common occupations: janitorial/custodial and stocking work • Common industries: warehouses, food service, janitorial and building services, retail, clerical settings, mail rooms, hospitals, laundries and recycling centers

  5. Needs Assessment Project • Literature search • Identification of federal agencies and national organizations with a role to play • Interviews with staff from 34 organizations, agencies, and programs to determine activities and interest in the topic

Needs Assessment Results • No database documenting employment or work-related injuries and illnesses among workers with disabilities. • Researchers report these workers are at increased risk of injury • Several researchers call for increased attention to the issue and to training. • Almost no one at the national level is addressing this issue. • Almost no health and safety training being provided

The Walgreens Model Goal: to have at least 1/3 of their distribution center workforce consist of employees with a variety of disabilities working in a fully-integrated team. • Project initiated at Anderson, South Carolina site. • Working with supported employment agencies to establish and operate training center. Pay, benefits, expectations same. Training for co-workers and staff in disability awareness. Transportation for employees. • New distribution center is highly automated and uses visual prompts for instructions. • Next training center to open in Connecticut in 2008.

The Curriculum Project • Develop a safety training program for Walgreens’ workers with DD • Conduct a TOT for job coaches to enable them to teach the training to Walgreens’ trainees and employees. • Develop a generic safety training program for use by supported employment agencies and organizations, and other employers. • Work with 1-2 states and one new employer to integrate the generic training.

Walgreens’ Current Health & Safety Training Program Training on the following topics using videos, PowerPoint slides and quizzes: • Emergency evacuation • Hazard communication • Hazardous materials • PPE • Blood borne pathogens • Powered industrial trucks and forklifts • Lock-out/tag-out • Hearing conservation

The New Health and Safety Training will include: Participatory learning activities on the following topics, modeled on Y@W:Talking Safety: • Identifying hazards • How hazards are controlled and injuries prevented • What to do in an emergency • Chemical safety • Ergonomics • Speaking up when there is a problem

Pilot test of Generic Activities • In Davis, CA with 12 adults with DD • Hired three WorkAbility staff to help facilitate activities • Topic areas: Identifying hazards, hazard control/injury prevention, emergency preparedness, speaking up when there is a problem at work. (5 hour training) • Activities based on Youth @ Work curriculum

Next Steps • Finish curriculum • Conduct pilot training at Walgreens in August • Possible second trip in September for TOT • Possible shortened version of curriculum for all Walgreens employees. • Adapt full curriculum for generic audience • Work with another state to conduct TOT for their supported employment agencies, using generic curriculum.
