  1. “Sirs, What Must I Do To Be Saved?” • Acts 16:30 And he brought them out and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”   • Acts 2:37 Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?” • Good Question!

  2. Why? • 4982 to save, keep safe and sound, to rescue from danger or destruction. • This implies that someone needs a rescue.

  3. We Need A Soul Rescue! • The Bible teaches a “soul salvation.” • 1 Peter 1:9 receiving the end of your faith, the salvation of your souls. • James 1:21 Wherefore, laying aside all filthiness and abounding of wickedness, accept with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.

  4. Why Does Our Soul Need A Rescue? • Ezekiel 18:20 The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son; the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him. • Proverbs 8:36 but he that sinneth against me doeth violence to his own soul: all they that hate me love death.

  5. Why Does Our Soul Need A Rescue? • Rom.3:23 For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God… • Rom. 6:23 For the wages of sin is death,… • Mark 2:17 ..I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

  6. What Is This Loss, Death, Destruction? • Matthew 10:28 And be not afraid of those who kill the body, but cannot kill the soul; but fear rather him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. • Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the act of favor of God, eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. • Matthew 25:46 And these shall go away into eternal punishment, and the righteous into life eternal.

  7. Who Can Rescue? • Psalm 23:3 He restoreth my soul; he leadeth me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.   • Psalm 41:4 As for me, I said, Jehovah, be gracious unto me: heal my soul; for I have sinned against thee. • Psalm 97:10 Ye that love Jehovah, hate evil: he preserveth the souls of his saints, He delivereth them out of the hand of the wicked.

  8. Who Is This Savior? • Luke 1:47 and my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior. • Luke 2:11 for today a Savior has been born to you in David’s city, who is Christ the Lord. • John 4:42 and they said to the woman, It is no longer on account of thy saying that we believe, for we have heard him ourselves, and we know that this is indeed the Savior of the world. • Titus 3:6 which he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior.

  9. How Did He Save Our Soul? • 1 John 2:1-2 and He is the propitiation for our sins; but not for ours alone, but also for the whole world. • Means of forgiveness, an atoning sacrifice, expiation, propitiation, the remedy for defilement • Matthew 26:28 For this is my blood, that of the new covenant, that shed for many for remission of sins.

  10. How Many Times? • Hebrews 9:28 thus the Christ also, having been once offered to bear the sins of many, shall appear to those that look for him the second time without sin for salvation.

  11. Synonyms For Saved In Bible • Romans 5:9-11 Much rather therefore, having been now justified in the power of his blood, we shall be saved by him from wrath. 10 For if, being enemies, we have been reconciled to God through the death of his Son, much rather, having been reconciled, we shall be saved in the power of his life. 11 And not only that, but we are making our boast in God, through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom now we have received the reconciliation.

  12. Synonyms For Saved In Bible • 1 Corinthians 6:11 And these things were some of you; but ye have been washed, but ye have been sanctified, but ye have been justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God. • Others

  13. Known Only Through The Bible! • Romans 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the glad tidings; for it is God’s power to salvation, to every one that believes, both to Jew first and to Greek:   • James 1:21 Wherefore, laying aside all filthiness and abounding of wickedness, accept with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.   • 1 Peter 1:23 being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the living and abiding word of God.

  14. Back To The Question“Sirs, What Must I Do To Be Saved?” • Not a difficult answer in 1st Century • Did it depends on who you asked (Peter,Paul,Phillip..)? • Today a problem because the purity of the gospel has been polluted by men over 2000 years. • Exposed to this teaching!

  15. Apostles/Prophets of 1st Century • No problems giving an answer. • Ephesians 4:3-6 endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. 4 There is onebody and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6 one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.

  16. Apostles/Prophets of 1st Century • 1 Corinthians 14:33 For God is not the author of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints. • Ephesians 3:3-5 4 by which, when you read, you may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ, which in other ages was not made known to the sons of men, as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to His holy apostles and prophets:

  17. How Can That Be? • 1 Corinthians 1:12 Now I say this, that each of you says, “I am of Paul,” or “I am of Apollos,” or “I am of Cephas,” or “I am of Christ.” • 1 Corinthians 3:4 For when one says, “I am of Paul,” and another, “I am of Apollos,” are you not carnal? • 1 Corinthians 1:10 Now I plead with you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.

  18. Back To The Question“Sirs, What Must I Do To Be Saved?” • The way to unity is the Word of God. • John 17:21 that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me. • Fulfilling that prayer ought to be our business! • Unbelievers hope!

  19. “Sirs, What Must I Do To Be Saved?”Some Things That Save • Ephesians 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God,   • Romans 10:13 For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” • 1 Peter 3:21 There is also an antitype which now saves us-baptism..

  20. Some Things That Save • Romans 10:9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. • Romans 10:17 So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. • Hebrews 5:9 And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him…,

  21. Some Things That Save • Luke 13:3 I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish.   • 1 Peter 1:23 having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever,.. • John 3:5 Unless one is born of the water and Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of heaven.

  22. Remember • John 8:32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.  • John 17:17 Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.   • Psalm 139:17 How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How great is the sum of them!

  23. Back To The Question“Sirs, What Must I Do To Be Saved?” • What do religious people teach? • Nothing at all – Universal salvation. • Faith Alone: Prayer of Faith – Something like, “I accept Jesus Christ as my Personal Savior. • Through baptism as an infant (original sin). • Waiting on the Holy Spirit to overcome. • Hears, believes (confess, repent) and baptismfor the forgiveness of sins.

  24. Acts 2:37-40 Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?” Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. And both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water, and he baptized him.Now when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught Philip away, so that the eunuch saw him no more; and he went on his way rejoicing. 27. Acts 16:14-15 Now a certain woman named Lydia heard us. She was a seller of purple from the city of Thyatira, who worshiped God. The Lord opened her heart to heed the things spoken by Paul. And when she and her household were baptized, she begged us, saying, “If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come to my house and stay.” So she persuaded us. And immediately he and all his family were baptized. Now when he had brought them into his house, he set food before them; and he rejoiced, having believed in God with all his household. 30. Which One Fits NT Examples? • Acts 22:11-16 And since I could not see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of those who were with me, I came into Damascus.“Then a certain Ananias, a devout man according to the law, having a good testimony with all the Jews who dwelt there, came to me; and he stood and said to me, ‘Brother Saul, receive your sight.’ And at that same hour I looked up at him. Then he said, ‘The God of our fathers has chosen you that you should know His will, and see the Just One, and hear the voice of His mouth. For you will be His witness to all men of what you have seen and heard. And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.’

  32. Baptism Is A Stumbling Block • 1 Corinthians 12:13 For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body— whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free—and have all been made to drink into one Spirit.   • Galatians 3:27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.   • Romans 6:4 Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. • Colossians 2:12 buried with Him in baptism, in which you also were raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead.

  33. Baptism Is A Stumbling Block • Acts 22:16 And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.’ • 1 Peter 3:21There is also an antitype which now saves us—baptism (not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,   • Mark 16:16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.

  34. In Conclusion“Sirs, What Must I Do To Be Saved?” • Good question. • Why do we need rescued? • Wages of sin is death/consequences • Jesus died for you once (remedy). • NT apostles and prophets gave one set of instructions. • NT examples cry out for all people to obey the command of Jesus in Mark 16:16! • How were you saved? It is important!
