Prior to Renting My First Flat, What Do I Wish I'd Known? There's always something you could have done better the last time you rented a place. A wide variety of issues and rules might throw you for a loop while renting a home. I wish I knew some of these things before moving into my first apartment, but it's impossible to anticipate everything. Everything should be done ahead of time I'm at a loss for words when it comes to describing the depressing first nine days I spent without cooking gas or access to the internet in my flat. To my surprise, it took over a week for these items to arrive after I moved in, and didn't call my gas provider until the next day. I expected to be able to switch on my cooking gas in a couple of days, but it took nine days to schedule an appointment, leaving me without a method to prepare food. Take photographs of the entire place before you move in We had so many cabinets in our new home that I kept forgetting how much room we had before we moved in! The video and photographs I took of the vacant space when we first saw it were invaluable in helping us purchase supplies and arrange the layout. We were able to find furniture that fit our space because I took measurements of each room and wrote them down. Is the rent inclusive of all utilities? However, it is very unusual for the majority or all of the utilities to be a separate monthly cost paid either to the property manager/complex or to the city directly, depending on where you live. Laundry Even though laundry is a necessity for everyone, it isn't offered everywhere. Some flats don't have washing facilities; therefore, renters are forced to find a place to wash their clothes outside of their unit. When looking for a new house, keep this in mind. It may work for some people, but it may not. Hand washing your clothes at home or using a local Laundromat are both options if no laundry facilities are offered.
