  1. What is Read Write Inc? A brief overview of Read Write Inc.

  2. The Importance of Learning to Read

  3. Some Read Write Inc. background

  4. Phonics is the process by which speech sounds are written down.

  5. Speech Sounds • Words are formed by a group of speech sounds • Each speech sound is articulated by one mouth movement • Each language has a different number of speech sounds • Although we speak with different accents most speech sounds are consistent

  6. Written Sounds • The principle of the alphabetic writing system is to visually codify speech • In most European countries one speech sound is recorded with one letter. E.g. 26 speech sounds and 26 letters • English has 44 speech sounds, therefore 26 letters is insufficient • Grouped letters together and added alternatives…So how many graphemes do our children need to learn?

  7. Decoding • When we read a word each letter, or group of letters produces a speech sound • The speech sounds are then blended into a spoken word • This is the process of decoding

  8. 150 Graphemes

  9. Encoding • When we write a word we start with the spoken word • We segment the words into speech sounds • Then we write the corresponding grapheme for each sounds • This is called encoding

  10. We decode the graphemes into sounds in order to read and we encode the sounds into graphemes in order to spell.
