  1. Tailoring future networks for the Internet of Things ContactSamuel ROPERTSenior consultant s.ropert@idate.org+33 4 67 14 44 77 Consulting . Research . DigiWorld Institute November 2013

  2. Scope and definition • IoT : any things could connect to the Internet (seen as the network of the networks) • It includes different concepts • M2M (machines = things with embedded electronics) • Internet of Objects (objects = basic and inert things) • Communicating devices (tablets, phones) • These concepts are very different • Different technologies • Different value chains • Different players • IDATE forecasts 80 billion connectedThings in 2020 • Definition • Internet of Things scope • Goal: to make the things communicating or to retrieve information to enhance its intrinsic value. • M2M often seen as the first step of IOT

  3. Smart machines Remote Server Data Module "Machine" Network Services Processing End client End users Viewing IC Middleware IS Gateway Services Sensors Modem Transport integration Distribution M2M value chain : a combination of value chains • Electronic value chain • Telecommunications value chain • Computing value chain • Value chain of the machines themselves Source: IDATE

  4. Some M2M market figures • 175 million active cellular modules in 2013 • The overall M2M volume market is growing fast in all wireless markets … + 30% CAGR, 2013-2017 • 470 million in 2017 • In 2017, M2M SIM cards represent • 5,9% of all SIM cards (human and machine) worldwide • 14% of all SIM cards in Europe • 24 billion EUR in 2013 (cellular M2M revenues) • … but growth is lower in terms of value + 13% CAGR, 2013-2017 • 39 billion EUR in 2017 • In 2017, M2M connectivity revenues represent • 1.3% of mobile revenues worldwide • 2.9% of mobile revenues in Europe
