  1. Cooling Towers; The Important Part Of District Cooling Systems

  2. The basic function of a cooling tower is to remove heat from a building or a complex of buildings using either water or air. • They transfer the heat from the building to the outside environment. • Their most common use is alongside a chiller. • As the condenser water leaves the chiller cooling tower removes the heat.

  3. Cooling tower systems are usually located on outdoor sites or on rooftops. • They are placed near different bodies of water like rivers or lakes to ensure that there is water is available constantly.

  4. Let us look at how a cooling tower functions? • The pipes connecting the condenser and the cooling towers carry the heated water from the industrial process and this flows either into or through the tower. • Once inside the tower, spray nozzles are used to spray water on a fill material with a large surface area that allows maximum contact with air.

  5. What are the components of a water cooling tower? It consists of two main components: • Water pumps - provides water for cooling • Large basin- it comes in different structures(cylindrical, rectangular, etc) and is made of different materials(plastic, steel, or composite). The basin contains all the heat dispersion equipment like spray nozzles.

  6. What are the types of cooling towers? • Open/Direct cooling tower- Here the warm water coming from the condenser is sprayed over fill and exposed to air. Evaporation removes the heat. • Closed(indirect) cooling tower- Here the water is sprayed across tubes within the tower and a fan blows air to cool it. Once cooled, the water is recirculated back to the chiller.

  7. District cooling system works best for large-scale operations including thermal power plants and oil and gas refining. • A cooling tower can provide a coolant temperature between 75F-80F during summers. • Their temperature depends on various factors like local wet bulb conditions and ambient air temperature.
