  1. IR Emissivity Updates For CrIMSS EDR; NASA LaRC Efforts Susan Kizer Xu Liu NASA Langley Research Center Suomi NPP CrIMSS EDR Cal/Val Telecon August 22, 2013

  2. BackgroundLast Cal/Val Meeting Discussion Initial Efforts Reported In Discussion During August 8, 2013 Cal/Val Telecon • Baseline – MX7.1 CrIMSS EDR LaRC offline code • Tested an updated CLIM LUT with updated covariance matrix, eof, background for 12 HP, 15 HP, and 16 HP • Tested using data date 05/15/2012, 107 granules • Did not see improvement in convergence rates, statistics (RMS, stddev, bias), or IR+MW chisq • Decided that a larger data set may be needed • Tested using data date 09/20/2012, 2696 granules • Targeted reduction of IR+MW chisq values over desert land • Tested new 16 HP setup with new 1st guess IR emissivity and reflectivity values over land • A six-year monthly average of IASI data was provided by Dan Zhou Feedback/Recommendations • Hold to first guess and performance looks better – Eric Maddy • After cloud clearing MW surface performance so poor. Cloud clearing over desert is poor. Pull out clear footprints, turn off cloud clearing. – Evan Fishbein • Turn off emissivity retrieval – Sung-Yung Lee • During validation of AIRS (Oklahoma site), restricted retrievals to those that agree and RMS statistics of H2O in boundary layer improved. Have a validation data set, start with Nick’s sondes. – Bob Knuteson

  3. BackgroundEmissivity 12, 15, 16 Hingepoints Sample of retrieved emissivity for the purpose of showing the location of hinge points Chose an FOR at 14.7 ° Latitude, 45.7° Longitude (Arabian Desert)

  4. Emissivity LW Sample Data Date 05/15/2012 Emissivity MW Sample Data Date 05/15/2012 Emissivity SW Sample Data Date 05/15/2012

  5. Current Progress • Pull out and investigate only clear scenes. • Investigating keeping the IR emissivity & reflectivity fixed at first guess values; do not let them change during retrieval.

  6. Current ProgressClear Scenes For 09/20/2012 Approximately 1.4% of total FORs Using CrIMSS EDR offline MX7.1

  7. Current Progress – Clear Sky Only Statistics 09/20/2012Clear MW+IR Baseline; MW+IR 16 HP; MW Only Baseline; MW Only 16 HP Ocean Land

  8. Continuing Efforts • Continue to evaluate IR emissivity for clear sky only • Review clear sky determination • Test when first guess emissivity/reflectivity is fixed – does not change in retrieval • Consult with CIMSS for collaboration
