  3. Second Sino-Japanese War • July 1937 – Japan invades China using Manchuria as a base for troops • Compare strategy in 1937 (red) and 1939 (yellow)

  4. Rape of Nanjing • Nanjing was the Chinese capital at the time • Japanese senior officers allowed troops to ransack Nanjing, murdering thousands as they went along • Estimates top 250,000 deaths at the Rape of Nanjing • Chiang Kai-Shek had to establish a new capital at Chongqing

  5. Japan attacks Pearl Harbor • Facing a stalemate in China, Japan turns its attention to the United States and attacks Pearl Harbor

  6. Japan stretched • Japan is now fighting three enemies: China, the USA, and Russia. • Much like Germany having to fight on multiple fronts, Japan’s military is stretched.

  7. End of the war for Japan • With troops stretched thin, a stalemate in China, and US troops advancing rapidly on Japan, things were not looking good • August 6, 1945, the US dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima • 70,000 Japanese citizens were immediately vaporized, an additional 100,000 died from burns and radiation sickness • Three days later, another bomb was dropped on Nagasaki- 80,000 vaporized • August 14, 1945, Japan surrendered
