  1. Proportions The Ratio Balancing Act

  2. What is a Proportion? An equation that shows the relationship between 2 equivalent ratios

  3. Is it a Proportion? Sometimes we need to determine if a set of ratios are proportional to each other. If the cross products are equivalent, the ratios are proportional. ? ? X 

  4. Now try these on your own…

  5. Solving a Proportion Find the cross products. • Solve the equation for x.

  6. Now try these on your own…

  7. Problem Solving with Proportions Proportions are used to solve many types of problems (converting measures, finding sales tax and interest, time & distance, working with recipes, comparing nutritional value between foods, making mixtures, etc.)

  8. The key to solving proportions is the setup… Match the Units or Things Compared

  9. Don’t forget the units in your answer Some Hiking Examples . . . A group of hikers covered 6 miles in 3 hours. If the total walking time was 8 hours, and they walked at the same rate all day, how long was the trail?

  10. Don’t forget the units in your answer Some Hiking Examples . . . Julie drank 0.5 quarts of water in the first 2 miles of the trail. At this rate, how much will she drink in 10 miles?

  11. Now try these on your own… Marcus took 21 pictures with his camera in the first 3 hours on the trail. He continued taking pictures at the same rate. How much time had passed after he had taken 30 pictures?

  12. Now try these on your own… The hikers ate 8 bags of trail mix on a 6-hour long hike. Assuming they would consume trail mix at the same rate, how much time would it take to eat 5 bags of trail mix?

  13. Now try these on your own… The group rested on the trail 10 times in 4 hours. At the same rate, how many times would would the hikers rest in 6 hours?
