  2. Comparing weird food used as delicacy and source of energy

  3. Reason for the intake of weird food • For the source as delicacy • Weird food in the form of delicacy is usually taken in developed countries, where people tend to be richer. • Hence some of these rich people will look for alternative sources of delicacy as they may be bored with eating the same type of food e.g. pork and is willing to try new things. • As these food are usually very rare, these people are more willing to spend money on them.

  4. The following slides contains photographs that may be disturbing to some. If you suffer from effects such as convulsions, vomiting, faintness, difficulty in breathing or foaming at the mouth, please see no more. Warning Ironically these are the symptoms for sarin poisoning…

  5. Examples of the delicacies

  6. Reason for the intake of weird food • As alternative energy source • Weird food in the form of an alternative energy source is usually eaten in less developed or developing countries, where people may not have enough money to purchase other food. • Thus these types of weird food is eaten to replace staple diet such as rice or wheat when such staple diet is scarce. • These types of food are usually high in energy content as they are a replacement for staple diet. • They are readily available, as they are usually all around us.

  7. Examples of weird food as energy source Clay: In some regions of Africa, due to the low mineral content of most of the food taken, some Africans will eat a certain type of clay which is very rich in mineral content similar to a multi-mineral tablet. And the most surprising thing is that this type of clay is dug and sold in marketplaces all over the world. Mopane caterpillar: In certain parts of South Africa, this type of caterpillar which lives in the mopane tree are eaten due to its high protein content. They are caught, roasted or deep-fried. Different types of bugs: In regions with little meat available, bugs became the ideal source of protein, due to the fact that most bugs have high protein content. (If only they are bigger…)

  9. Case study: Insects as an alternative energy source Pros Cons • Insects have a higher energy input to protein output ratio then livestock. • Insects reproduce at a faster rate then other livestock. • Breeding insects requires less space and resources and of course, money. • Toxicity. Some insects are poisonous. • Cultural taboo. • Religious issues. • Insects look disgusting. Comparing pros and cons of eating insects (entomophagy) as source of energy
