  1. Lessons from the Shipwreck of the Costa Concordia

  2. Lessons from the Shipwreck of the Costa Concordia On January 13 of this year, the cruise ship Costa Condordia ran aground and wrecked off the coast of Italy. The details of what caused the wreck point to the ship's captain, Francesco Schettino. Over 3200 passengers and in excess of 1000 crew members were on board at the time of the disaster. To date, twenty-five persons have been confirmed dead and five are still missing. Captain Schittino is under house arrest, charged with manslaughter.

  3. Lessons from the Shipwreck of the Costa Concordia The Bible Speaks of Disasters At Sea • Jonah was thrown into the sea to avoid shipwreck.

  4. Jonah 1:1-5 Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, 2 “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry out against it; for their wickedness has come up before Me.” 3 But Jonah arose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. He went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid the fare, and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. 4 But the Lord sent out a great wind on the sea, and there was a mighty tempest on the sea, so that the ship was about to be broken up. 5 Then the mariners were afraid; and every man cried out to his god, and threw the cargo that was in the ship into the sea, to lighten the load. But Jonah had gone down into the lowest parts of the ship, had lain down, and was fast asleep. NKJV

  5. Jonah 1:12 And he said to them, “Pick me up and throw me into the sea; then the sea will become calm for you. For I know that this great tempest is because of me.”NKJV Jonah 1:15 So they picked up Jonah and threw him into the sea, and the sea ceased from its raging. NKJV

  6. Lessons from the Shipwreck of the Costa Concordia The Bible Speaks of Disasters At Sea • Jonah was thrown into the sea to avoid shipwreck. • The disciples of Jesus thought they would perish at sea.

  7. Matthew 8:23-27 Now when He got into a boat, His disciples followed Him. 24 And suddenly a great tempest arose on the sea, so that the boat was covered with the waves. But He was asleep. 25 Then His disciples came to Him and awoke Him, saying, “Lord, save us! We are perishing!” 26 But He said to them, “Why are you fearful, O you of little faith?” Then He arose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. 27 So the men marveled, saying, “Who can this be, that even the winds and the sea obey Him?” NKJV

  8. Lessons from the Shipwreck of the Costa Concordia The Bible Speaks of Disasters At Sea • Jonah was thrown into the sea to avoid shipwreck. • The disciples of Jesus thought they would perish at sea. • Paul suffered shipwreck at least three times.

  9. 2 Corinthians 11:25 Three times I was beaten with rods; once I was stoned; three times I was shipwrecked; a night and a day I have been in the deep; NKJV Acts 27:14-15 But not long after, a tempestuous head wind arose, called Euroclydon. 15 So when the ship was caught, and could not head into the wind, we let her drive. NKJV

  10. Acts 27:19 On the third day we threw the ship’s tackle overboard with our own hands. NKJV Acts 27:41 But striking a place where two seas met, they ran the ship aground; and the prow stuck fast and remained immovable, but the stern was being broken up by the violence of the waves. NKJV

  11. Lessons from the Shipwreck of the Costa Concordia The Bible Speaks of Spiritual Shipwrecks • Paul mentions two men who made shipwreck of their faith. 1 Timothy 1:19-20 having faith and a good conscience, which some having rejected, concerning the faith have suffered shipwreck, 20 of whom are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I delivered to Satan that they may learn not to blaspheme.

  12. Lessons from the Shipwreck of the Costa Concordia The Bible Speaks of Spiritual Shipwrecks • Paul mentions two men who made shipwreck of their faith. • They shipwrecked because they deviated from the truth.

  13. Lessons from the Shipwreck of the Costa Concordia The Bible Speaks of Spiritual Shipwrecks • Paul mentions two men who made shipwreck of their faith. • They shipwrecked because they deviated from the truth.

  14. 2 Timothy 2:17-18 And their message will spread like cancer. Hymenaeus and Philetus are of this sort, 18 who have strayed {erred-KJV} concerning the truth, saying that the resurrection is already past; and they overthrow the faith of some. Strayed- astocheo, as-tokh-eh'-o to miss the mark, i.e. (figuratively) deviate from truth:--err, swerve. 2 Timothy 4:14 Alexander the coppersmith did me much harm. May the Lord repay him according to his works. NKJV

  15. Lessons from the Shipwreck of the Costa Concordia The Bible Speaks of Spiritual Shipwrecks • They shipwrecked because they deviated from the truth. • What was the result of their shipwreck? • They destroyed their own faith. 1 Timothy 1:19 • They destroyed the faith of others. 2 Timothy 2:18; 1 Corinthians 8:11-13

  16. Lessons from the Shipwreck of the Costa Concordia Shipwrecks Can Happen Unexpectedly • They can happen! (Some teach they cannot happen) Galatians 6:1-2 Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted. 2 Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.

  17. James 5:19-20 Brethren, if anyone among you wanders from the truth, and someone turns him back, 20 let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save a soul from death and cover a multitude of sins. NKJV

  18. 2 Peter 2:20-22 For if, after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the latter end is worse for them than the beginning. 21 For it would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than having known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered to them. 22 But it has happened to them according to the true proverb: “A dog returns to his own vomit,” and, “a sow, having washed, to her wallowing in the mire.” NKJV

  19. Lessons from the Shipwreck Shipwrecks Can Happen Unexpectedly • They can happen! (Some teach they cannot happen) • We must be on the watch. Mark 13:32-33 “But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 33 Take heed, watch and pray; for you do not know when the time is.” NKJV

  20. Mark 14:38 Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak. NKJV Luke 21:36 Watch therefore, and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man.

  21. Lessons from the Shipwreck of the Costa Concordia Avoiding Shipwreck • Don’t neglect your salvation. Hebrews 2:1-3 Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away. 2 For if the word spoken through angels proved steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just reward, 3 how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those who heard Him,

  22. Lessons from the Shipwreck of the Costa Concordia Avoiding Shipwreck • Don’t neglect your salvation. • Keep focused on the goal. 1 Peter 1:3-4 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, NKJV

  23. Lessons from the Shipwreck of the Costa Concordia Avoiding Shipwreck • Don’t neglect your salvation. • Keep focused on the goal. • Stay the course. • Many Old Testament passages warn about turning to the right or the left.

  24. Deuteronomy 5:32 Therefore you shall be careful to do as the Lord your God has commanded you; you shall not turn aside to the right hand or to the left. NKJV Deuteronomy 17:11 According to the sentence of the law in which they instruct you, according to the judgment which they tell you, you shall do; you shall not turn aside to the right hand or to the left from the sentence which they pronounce upon you. NKJV

  25. Deuteronomy 17:20 that his heart may not be lifted above his brethren, that he may not turn aside from the commandment to the right hand or to the left, and that he may prolong his days in his kingdom, he and his children in the midst of Israel. 2 Kings 22:2 And he {Josiah} did what was right in the sight of the Lord, and walked in all the ways of his father David; he did not turn aside to the right hand or to the left. NKJV Proverbs 4:27 Do not turn to the right or the left; remove your foot from evil.

  26. Lessons from the Shipwreck of the Costa Concordia Avoiding Shipwreck • Don’t neglect your salvation. • Keep focused on the goal. • Stay the course. • Many Old Testament passages warn about turning to the right or the left. • In the New Testament we are warned about drifting away.

  27. Hebrews 2:1 Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away.

  28. Lessons from the Shipwreck of the Costa Concordia Avoiding Shipwreck • Keep focused on the goal. • Stay the course. • Many Old Testament passages warn about turning to the right or the left. • In the New Testament we are warned about drifting away. • We are warned in the Old and New Testament about adding to or taking from God’s word.

  29. Deuteronomy 4:2 You shall not add to the word which I command you, nor take from it, that you may keep the commandments of the Lord your God which I command you. NKJV Revelation 22:18 For I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds to these things, God will add to him the plagues that are written in this book; NKJV

  32. Lessons from the Shipwreck of the Costa Concordia Many Times People Die In Shipwrecks • The first spiritual shipwreck.

  33. Genesis 3:1-6 Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, “Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?” 2 And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden; 3 but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die.’ ” 4 Then the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. 5 For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” 6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate.

  34. Lessons from the Shipwreck of the Costa Concordia Many Times People Die In Shipwrecks • The first spiritual shipwreck. • The spiritual result of spiritual shipwreck.

  35. Revelation 20:11-15 Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away. And there was found no place for them. 12 And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books. 13 The sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. And they were judged, each one according to his works. 14 Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. 15 And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire. NKJV
