Professors are big on discussions more often than lectures and generally make lessons fun and interesting. One student praises courses within the Psychology department for having designed their courses to mimic graduate school courses, and strongly emphasize research...and clinical counseling skills. Students praise Lewis for providing opportunities for research and internships, and for providing additional services such as career services. This includes resume reviews, mock interviews, and assistance with applying to graduate school. Even after students have graduated from Lewis, these services are available to them.

  6. Student Body Lewis students are friendly, supportive, and down-to-earth. They dream of moving to larger cities. The size of the school and the large commuter population means, there is a tight-knit community within...disciplines. Many students come from local junior colleges. Due to being a school with a yellow ribbon, there is a high number of veteran students. Lewis also attracts older and non-traditional students because of its online classes and proximity to suburbs. One student said, "Though Lewis is predominantly Catholic, there are still many students from all religions and backgrounds." Campus Life Lewis is largely a commuter school. It is estimated that around 40% of students live off campus. Students describe a calm, focused and determined environment. Most students are able to focus on their studies in the computer lab or library. Students may also venture into Romeoville for food or the nature trail, but students say it's important to know that Lewis is in a quiet town, so they often have to make [their] own fun. On campus, the recreation center provides a small arcade and pool hall, (called Flyer's Lounge) along with decent food. Students can contribute in a variety of ways to the school, whether they are involved in STEM committees, sports, or recreational clubs. Chicago is close by, allowing residential students to get away on weekends and check out what the city has to offer. The Illinois Campus Sustainability Compact gave Lewis a bronze level recognition level for sustainability impact in 2012. In 2013, Lewis was awarded the silver level by the ICSC. This commitment is reflected in the Lewis academic experience. Students who major in environmental science have the option to further specialize in sustainability or ecology, as well as the opportunity to volunteer at local institutions such the Morton Arboretum, the Shedd Aquarium, and participate in internships and other curricular activities. Lewis sponsors an annual Come Clean, Go Green Sustainability contest, which funds the creation and implementation its winners projects. The Lewis University Sustainability Council coordinates the planting of trees and clearing campus nature trails of invasive species on Arbor Day. The campus collects rainwater and reuses it through collection sites, permeable pavements, bioswales and The Glen, a filtration site and reservoir. Lewis's dining service composts food waste, and landscaping waste from campus's nature trails is recycled. Environmental science classes are also involved in a prairie restoration project. Similar efforts are made on campus to conserve energy. The campus uses occupancy sensors, LED lights and Energy Star-rated appliances. White and green roofs also help reduce energy consumption. Students, faculty, staff and students can use the campus' two electric-vehicle charging station. The Lewis's Student Pledge requires students to pledge their support for responsible stewardship of the environment and limited resources. The university sets an excellent example in this regard.
