  1. Design and Performance Study of A Basic Internet Telephony Network: a Case Study of Bangladesh by Shafiul Azam Examination Committee : Dr. K.M. Ahmed (Chairman) Mr. Tapio Erke Dr. Kanchana Kanchanasut Asian Institute of Technology School of Advanced Technologies Bangkok, Thailand September, 1998

  2. Design and Performance Study of A Basic Internet Telephony Network: a Case Study of Bangladesh Introduction Internet Telephony In traditional circuit switched telephony network call are Analog and constantly use 64 Kbps of bandwidth. Internet Telephony is digital in nature where real-time voice communication occurs over a packet network using Internet Protocol. Internet Telephony represents a significant step towards the integration of voice and data in IP Network.

  3. Why Internet Telephony? • Reduce International tool charges • Quality is satisfactory • Integration of voice and data in the same IP Network • Less Bandwidth consumption

  4. Internet in Bangladesh • In mid 1993, Prodeshta Net started offline Internet E-mail service for the first time in Bangladesh • 4 th June, 1996 Information Service Network (ISN) introduced online • Internet service for the first time in Bangladesh Internet service Providers are dependent on VSAT and Government own satellite link with a channel capacity of 64/128 Kbps for their service • ISPs are using Intel Pentium - II PC and SUN SPARK as server and Digital UNIX, SUN OS and SUN Solaris as their operating system

  5. Statement of the Problem • No unique standardization • No defined architecture • Need to find out the required link capacity • Need to calculate the QoS of the network

  6. Research Objectives • To propose a basic Internet Telephony network based on the existing Internet architecture • To investigate the QoS of the proposed network • To illustrate the above objectives by performing a case study on Bangladesh

  7. Scopes and Limitations of the Study • QoS of the proposed network is calculated in terms of delay and throughput only • If required parameter or data are not available, then we assume typical parameter or approximate calculation • Restricted availability of technical information • Traffic simulation is not possible due to time constraints *****************************
