Melodic unit Melodic unit (MU): expression of complex balance of both phonological and syntactic sequences in a prose passage, by convention identified in relation to its syllabic extension; span of MU = by convention, number of syllables MU= meaningful portion of speech, with a musical form, between two pauses; length of pauses can vary according to value of punctuation in written texts.

  3. Value of punctuation varies from long to short through medium: it denotes a continuous phonic emission corresponding to a textual portion between two punctuation marks. Passage from unit to unit denotes the melodic sequence which constitutes speech or text musical form.

  4. The weather continued much the same all the following morning; and the same loneliness, and the same melancholy, seemed to reign at Hartfield; but in the afternoon it cleared; the wind changed into a softer quarter; the clouds were carried off; the sun appeared; it was summer again.
