  3. Republicans Impeach Johnson • Republican’s pass: • Command of the Army Act • Office of Tenure Act • Johnson tests act by firing Edwin Stanton • House votes to Impeach Johnson • Senate votes 35-19 to Impeach (1 vote short)

  4. Republican’s Expand Power • Ulysses Grant wins Republican Presidency • Pass 15th Amendment to preserve African votes

  5. Carpetbaggers and Scalawags • Carpetbaggers – Northerners who moved south after the war • Scalawags- Southerners who worked with the Republicans and Northerners • Whigs, Small farmers, Southern Businessmen

  6. Birth of the Ku Klux Klan • Southern White Resentment unable to strike blows at the Republicans in control • Broke up Republican meetings, drove out Freedman’s Bureau, Intimidated Blacks and White Republicans • Main goal to resist Republican reconstruction

  7. Ku Klux Klan Act • Used to combat Ku Klux Klan • Made it a crime to interfere with voting • Federal Elections supervised by federal marshals • Outlawed activities of the Klan

  8. Split of the Republican Party • Sin Tax – Republicans tax alcohol and tobacco to pay for reconstruction • Democrats argue that policies benefit rich and hurt poor, liberal Republicans agree • Liberal Republicans nominate their own candidate for president – Horace Greely • Grant wins re-election though

  9. Turmoil during Grant’s 2nd term • Graft by William Belknap • Whiskey Ring: St Louis officials file false tax reports • Panic of 1873:bad RR investments lead to downturn in economy • Helps Democrats regaining control

  10. Compromise of 1877 • Rutherford B Hayes vs Samuel Tilden for Pres. • Voter fraud on both sides • Congress appoints 15 man commission to decide president • House and Senate Ratify • Was a deal made?
