  1. PET 4 life A spot advertising a PET preparation course

  2. Background PET is the second level Cambridge ESOL exam. It is an intermediate level exam, at Level B1 of the Council of Europe's Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. PET is a valuable qualification for people wanting to work or study abroad or to develop a career in international business. It is also useful preparation for higher level exams, such as FCE (First Certificate in English), CAE (Certificate in Advanced English) and CPE (Certificate of Proficiency in English. Our school is a secondary post-compulsory vocational school, where English is the only taught foreign language. There are 3 classes per week for a total amount of 90 hours a year. Over the last 5 years the Department of English has tried hard to improve the level of the language acquired at the end of the curriculum of study. For the first time last year we organized an elective course in preparation for the PET exam. Thirteen students took it, ten passed the examination , of whom 3 with merit. Of the remaining three, two narrowly failed it while one failed it completely. The students participating in the elective course expressed their satisfaction for the organized activities and were fully aware of the importance of this internationally recognized certification. The Department of English objective this year is that of increasing the number of students taking PET by advertising the initiative.

  3. CLIP OBJECTIVES This video clip intends to inform students and parents that: • PET preparation elective courses are organized in the school. • PET will be taken May 2005 • Multimedia lab will be used to help them develop their language skills. • Students will focus on the development of those language abilities enabling them to interact for academic, business or interpersonal purposes. The clip also intends to convince students and parents that PET is worth taking.

  4. CLIP OVERVIEW: SCENES SCENE 1 : Setting: the ground floor corridor of the school, the students’ notice board. 5. Transitions and music and time I find it difficul to decide at the planning stage which transitions to include and which music to choose. I definetly know that some shots will have some transitions i.e a “dissolve” effect will be introduced to pass from an overview of the multimedia language lab setting the scene to the medium shots of students working on the computer, but I think I will have to verify my hypothesis against the actual result in the editing phase and introduce changes where required. As for music, this is not an easy task as should emphasize images. My view is that I will include a quiet background music for scenes 1 and 2 and something more lively for scene 3. The estimated time for the first two scenes is of about 20 seconds, while the third scene should be shorter.
