  4. Mission Focus ALLstudents will graduate prepared and READY for college or career. ‹#›

  5. Why does this matter? “Sixth graders who failed math or English/reading, or attended school less than 80% of the time, or received an unsatisfactory behavior grade in a core course had only a 10% to 20% chance of graduating on time.” Balfanz, Robert. Putting Middle Grades Students on the Graduation Path: A Policy and Practice Brief. National Middle School Association, 2009, Putting Middle Grades Students on the Graduation Path: A Policy and Practice Brief, www.amle.org/portals/0/pdf/articles/policy_brief_balfanz.pdf. 5

  6. “A student who can't read on grade level by 3rd grade is four times less likely to graduate by age 19 than a child who does read proficiently by that time. Add poverty to the mix, and a student is 13 timesless likely to graduate on time than his or her proficient, wealthier peer.” Hernandez, Donald J. Double Jeopardy: How Third-Grade Reading Skills and Poverty Influence High School Graduation. The Annie E. Casey Foundation, 2011, Double Jeopardy: How Third-Grade Reading Skills and Poverty Influence High School Graduation, files.eric.ed.gov/fulltext/ED518818.pdf.. 6

  10. #1 What do we expect OUR students to learn? #2 How do we know they have learned it? Universal Screener/ Diagnostic Data Common Formative Assessments (CFA) District Checkpoints STAAR Identifying “Essential Standards” • Readiness • Endurance • Assessed • Leverage • (REAL Protocol for Standards. Professional Development. Midland ISD) 10

  11. #3 How will WE respond when they don’t learn it? Response to Intervention: "RTI—also known as a multitiered system of support (MTSS)—is a systematic [framework] that helps ensure ALL students receive the time and support needed to learn at high levels." (https://www.solutiontree.com/rti-at-work) Tier 1- Core Instruction Tier 2- Prerequisite Skill Gaps Tier 3- Foundational Skill Gaps 11

  12. #4 How will we respond if they already know it? Gifted/ Talented Differentiation of instruction Extension stations/ classes 12

  13. Final Thoughts There isn’t one right system or framework for RTI. Students can receive interventions as a part of all three tiers depending on the content and the skill. Continue providing interventions for students regardless if a specialist begins to support or if they are referred. ALL students are OUR students. PLC is a necessary foundation for RTI success. If you put the majority of your effort into ensuring your Tier 1 core instruction is solid, you won’t be struggling to fill out plans for tons of students for Tier 2 & 3. 13
