Health Choices Vocabulary • Health:freedom from physical disease • Wellness:maximum well-being • Life Management Skills: skills that allow person to be well and enjoy life • Lifestyle Choices: daily choices on how to treat body and mind • Lifestyle Disease: diseases made likely by neglect of body

  3. Lifestyle Diseases • Heart Disease • Lung Disease • Cancer • Diabetes • Liver Disease

Leading Causes of Death 1890’s • Flu • Pneumonia • Tuberculosis • Bronchitis • Stroke Cause: Germs/Bacteria NO 1 cause of death for Teenagers: Accidents • 1990’s • Heart Disease • Cancer • Suicide • Diabetes • HIV Infection Cause: Choices make in life Why Accidents? Teenagers act off of impulse, irrational Smoking: Lung Cancer

  5. Family Health Choices • Lead to have a hereditary Factors Health ChoicesLink(Outcome) • Smoking 1. Lung Cancer • Poor nutrition 2. Diabetes • Alcohol 3. Liver Disease • Smokeless Tobacco 4. Oral Cancer Healthy Choices lead to Healthy Lifestyle!!!

  6. Assignment: Pg. 10 Essay • Write a one page essay on the six factors that have the most impact on the condition of people’s body systems (refer to page 9). The essay should include how you rate yourself in these areas. What, if any, areas need improvements? • Turn in when finished

  9. Physical Health • Gets enough sleep • Uses food to get nutritional needs • Maintains appropriate weight • Works to achieve physical fitness • Does not abuse drugs • Takes preventative measures • Aware of infectious diseases • Knows disease risks and measures to take

  10. Social Health • Develops supportive relationships • Effectively resolves conflicts • Socializes well with others without the influence of drugs or alcohol • Understands the risks of STD’s and pregnancy and will take responsibility • Continues to grow and learn and face new challenges

Making Behavior Changes • Motivation is shaped by 4 factors: • The Value of the reward • How big is the reward? • Its Timing • How soon will the reward come or how soon will the price have to be paid? • The Costs • What is the risks or consequences? • Its Probability • How certain is the reward?
