  9. Overview How Do You Know When You Need One? The Value Of An Interim Executive How Does This All Work? How Do I Get Started? More Useful Info TODAY’S AGENDA What do you get with an Interim Executive?

  10. The decision to hire an interim executive is often sudden: How do you, as the hiring hospital, know what kind of leader you are getting? Are they qualified? Prepared to act? Are they the right ”fit” for the immediate needs of the institution? It is critical that you can be confident in the capabilities of the interim leader. This webinar is designed to help you understand what a professional interim is (and is not), and how to be sure that you are getting the right one. We will also explain how to get started and what the operational process is in placing a pro quickly with your organization. Overview

  11. Losing any member of a management team always creates a certain amount of turmoil, and quite often an opportunity for change. The vacuum must be filled by other executives on the team, or the work goes undone. but more importantly, we usually see drops in the entire team’s (and the organization’s) performance due to a lack of leadership, expertise and cohesion. Permanent placement of executive level positions typically takes 90-120 days – even longer if it is a senior executive position. That is a long period of time to be without leadership for any organization, particularly in an organization as complex as a hospital. This is where utilizing interim executives can bridge that gap in leadership and take advantage of the skills and experience an interim professional can bring. How do you know when you need one?

  12. Sometimes it is pretty obvious… You have a glaring hole in the org chart Sudden departure of the incumbent (termination, new job elsewere, illness, family reasons...) Organizational sale or change in management model Restructure of the board/governance structure Sometimes not so much… Financial, clinical or operational turnaround is needed Institutional inertia or stagnation Diminishing culture Eroding trust or lack of confidence (Board, Medical Staff, Employees, Community...) Realization that the institution does not have the particular expertise needed for change How do you know when you need one?

  13. We need to “shake the tree…” “but we all like him…” “our kids go to school together...” Making a change is often painful – and scary, but Ultimately, boards (and the administration) are accountable to the institutions they serve When a change is needed, there needs to be a smooth, professional transition Once action is decided upon, prudent speed is needed But fear needs to be minimized Professionalism is critical to managing disruption How do you know when you need one?

  14. Interim Leaders are typically project and goal oriented A specific task, project, or need can be filled with external expertise, often not readily available within the host organization Interim’s can bring specialized consulting expertise without the overhead of a large consulting firm Access to highly qualified management skills Interim’s are cost effective Virtually no recruitment costs, other than a typical mark up on the daily rate No PTO, no benefits expense There are no “end costs.” When the project is done, it’s done, and the expense goes away Interim’s are available quickly Usually on-site placement can happen within a week or two Interim’s are generally not a threat to internal staff and existing management Value of an Interim Executive

  15. Professional Interims are: Highly trained executives and administrators Have chosen interim work as their avocation People who enjoy helping solve urgent / pressing problems Subject matter experts Leaders who can quickly understand local issues Not afraid to make tough decisions (often, that is the reason for the opening) Diplomatic and professional Politically astute Their role is to guide an institution through a difficult transition period And, they view themselves as 100% committed to the institution – for as long as is necessary Value of an Interim Executive

  16. Professional interims arenot: People just looking to fill a gap before their next permanent position Folks who have difficulty holding permanent jobs or job jumpers People who will leave you high and dry suddenly when “something better” comes along Caretakers There to be “bomb throwers” or “hatchet men” Value of an Interim Executive

  17. Typically Independent Contractor Arrangements vs W-2 Travel home every other week Standard arrangement is 20-22 days onsite per month Paid on a daily rate – which varies depending on position/scope Travel, Housing, Car is reimbursed by client site Per Diem for MI&E (meals, incidentals and expenses) IC Agreement with a placement company like HealthTechS3 Company does background and reference checks (immediately prior to placement also a drug screen) Agree on a daily rate for a given assignment Candidates are presented to client facility who then selects candidates for direct interview (usually via Skype or phone) If agreed by all, Interim firm issues work order to both client facility and to interim Assignment begins! How does this all work?

  18. Simply contact an Interim Placement Firm like HealthTechS3 Tell us what you need, how soon you need someone, and the priorities for the interim to address (financial turnaround, cultural leadership, clinical quality, others…). Sometimes the position is still confidential – that’s ok, we will be discreet in posting, and in what can be revealed to prospective candidates, until you tell us otherwise. Provide a job description if you have one. Complete an Interim Staffing Agreement with us. This allows us to present you with candidates for consideration. Each candidate presented will have been background checked and vetted for compatibility for your specific requirements and are available to meet your starting dates. How Do I Get Started?

  19. We will begin screening candidates for specialty skill set, licensure (if appropriate), geographic and demographic matches, and most importantly – “fit” – based on our conversations with you, the client. When candidate information is presented to you, we will also provide you with the daily billing rate. Let us know as soon as possible which one (or ones) you would like to interview. We will coordinate that with the candidates and the facility. Depending on the position sought, the potential candidates may request further operational information prior to the interview, so that they can be appropriately prepared (current financials, quality dashboards, audits, survey findings, etc.). Following your interview(s), simply let us know which candidate you would like to bring onboard. HealthTechS3 will send you a client work order. This outlines the agreed terms for the particular assignment (start date, daily rate, travel, per diem, etc.). There are no hidden costs or surprises. How Do I Get Started?

  20. As soon as that work order is returned, we will issue a similar work order to the selected interim, and the assignment can begin. We invoice the client facility for estimated work days in a given month, with a “true up” the following month. This invoicing is done in advance based on estimated days so that HealthTechS3 is not “fronting” the client payroll. Expenses are invoiced separately as they are submitted with full documentation. We invoice you and reimburse the interim. You don’t have to worry about benefits, taxes, unemployment, or retirement. Some hospitals have housing available, or discounted rates at local hotels and choose to have those direct billed to the facility. That is entirely up to the facility. And when the assignment is done, it’s done. No lingering expenses. It is as straightforward as that – just call and we can find the right professional for your needs. How Do I Get Started?

  21. HealthTechS3 is continuing to grow its candidate pool We support all executive and senior administrative levels Our interims are also supported by our deep consulting base and operational management tools Financial, Clinical, Compliance, Productivity, Care Management, Revenue Cycle, Materials, Strategic Planning, Affiliation Consulting and more. These resources are available to the interim for consultation as an added benefit, and an enhancement to their performance. More Useful Info
