  2. Founded • Founded in 1663. • Founders- Edward, Earl of Clarendon; George, Duke of Albemarle; William, Earl of Craven; John Lord Berkley; Sir John Colleton; Anthony Lord Ashley; Sir George Carteret; Sir William Berkley

  3. Government • 1719-South Carolina was formed from Carolina and made a Royal Colony. • 1729-North Carolina was sold by its proprietors to England and assumed the title of Royal Colony. • These colonies were ruled by Provincial Governors appointed by the King.

  4. Economy • Trade was conducted by bartering • Agriculture : Rice was most profitable. • 1750: North Carolina- pork & corn, South Carolina- rice, pitch, tar, turpentine, buck-skins, fur, etc.

  5. Black History • One third of all the slave in the Colonies were located in the Carolinas. They supplied the labor required for plantation operation.

  6. Women's History • Women in the Carolinas could not only inherit land but also buy and sell property, own slaves, and speak openly like the men of the era. • These women were called “Female Planters”

  7. Women’s History cont. • Rights depended on the marital status. Unmarried-Own and Sell property Widower-Inherit husband’s land

  8. Religion • Primarily Anglican in the early years of the colony. • 1740 – Great Awakening influenced a rise in protestants, this was popular among poor farmers and slaves.
