  1. Physics Chapter 3B Speed, Velocity and Acceleration

  2. Speed Defined: distance travelled divided by time required for travel Average speed: total distance/total time Example p 41: A bicycle rider travels 22 km in 3.25 hours. What is the average speed of the bicycle rider?

  3. Velocity Velocity is distance AND direction of travel Velocity is a vector function Average velocity = total displacement/total time Example p41: A high speed train takes 2.00 hours to travel from Paris 454 km due south to Lyons. What is average velocity of the train?

  4. Acceleration • Acceleration is the rate of change of velocity • Equation: a = vf - vi • t • Acceleration is a vector! • May be a change in: • Speed • Direction • Both

  5. Acceleration Example • The velocity of a car increases from 0 to 14 m/s, E in 3.5 s. What is the car’s acceleration? • What do you know? • Vf = 14 m/s E • Vi = 0 m/s • t = 3.5 s • What is the equation? • A = (Vf – Vi)/t

  6. Acceleration Example Continued: • Put the values in the equation! • No math yet! • a = (14 m/s – 0 m/s) / 3.5 s • Do the math! • a = 4 m/s2 • Check for units and sig dig! • a = 4.0 m/s2

  7. Negative Acceleration • Negative acceleration occurs when an object slows down • There is no ‘deceleration’ in physics! • Example: An automobile slows from 14.0 m/s E to 7.0 m/s E in 2.0 s. Find its acceleration.
