  2. The Underground Railroad A.) The Underground Railroad was a network of secret routes and safe houses used slaves of African descent in the United States to escape slavery and go to free states and Canada with the aid of abolitionists and allies who were sympathetic to their cause.

  3. The Underground Railroad The UNDERGROUND RAILROAD was not actually “Underground.” In fact, it was above ground and the places they would go to were also above ground. They knew they were heading to freedom if they were following the North Star. (POLARIS)

  4. The Underground Railroad B.) Well, you may ask, why did they follow the North Star, POLARIS. Here is why. Most slaves did not know how to read, write, do math or really interpret direction, So the North Star was their guide. It was a symbol of Freedom for Slaves both Boy and Girl.

  6. The Underground Railroad D.) Harriet Tubman: Was an African-American abolitionist, humanitarian, and Union spy during the American Civil War. Born into slavery, Tubman escaped an made more than nineteen missions to rescue more than 300 slaves using the Underground Railroad. If captured, the capturer would Gain $40,000 returning her.

The Fugitive Slave Act of 1850- The Fugitive Slave Law or Fugitive Slave Act was passed by the United States Congress on September 18, 1850, as part of the Compromise of 1850 between Southern slave-holding interests and Northern Free-Soliders. This was one of the most controversial acts of the 1850 compromise and heightened Northern fears of a slave power conspiracy. It declared that all runaway slaves were, upon capture, to be returned to their masters. Abolitionists nicknamed it the "Bloodhound Law" for the dogs that were used to track down runaway slaves. Even freeman could be captured and sold into slavery.
