  2. TO SERVE / OR BE SERVED? Introduction • Focus, goal in life? • Answer crucial to understand God’s kingdom • Answer crucial to contentment or discontentment • Answer crucial to final salvation

  3. TO SERVE / OR BE SERVED? Introduction • Finding our focus: • The kingdom of God is a kingdom of servants. • The master is a servant. • Christ emptied himself to serve & save others. • Our use of key words reveals our attitude. • Our actions express our attitude.

  4. TO SERVE / OR BE SERVED? I. Matt. 20:17-28 The Kingdom of God Is a Kingdom of Servants. • Vv. 17-19 Jesus prophesied to his disciples his suffering & death.

  5. Matt. 20:17-19 • 17 And Jesus going up to Jerusalem took the twelve disciples apart in the way, and said unto them, • 18 Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be betrayed unto the chief priests and unto the scribes, and they shall condemn him to death, • 19 And shall deliver him to the Gentiles to mock, and to scourge, and to crucify him: and the third day he shall rise again.

  6. TO SERVE / OR BE SERVED? I. Matt. 20:17-28 The Kingdom of God Is a Kingdom of Servants. • Vv. 20-23 Jesus’ disciples experienced personal ambition, envy, & strife.

  7. 20 Then came to him the mother of Zebedee's children with her sons, worshipping him, and desiring a certain thing of him. • 21 And he said unto her, What wilt thou? She saith unto him, Grant that these my two sons may sit, the one on thy right hand, and the other on the left, in thy kingdom. • 22 But Jesus answered and said, Ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They say unto him, We are able. • 23 And he saith unto them, Ye shall drink indeed of my cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with: but to sit on my right hand, and on my left, is not mine to give, but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared of my Father.

  8. TO SERVE / OR BE SERVED? I. Matt. 20:17-28 The Kingdom of God Is a Kingdom of Servants. • Vv. 24-28Jesus taught them to seek to serve, not to be served.

  9. 24 And when the ten heard it, they were moved with indignation against the two brethren. • 25 But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them. • 26 But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister; • 27 And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant: • 28 Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.

  10. TO SERVE / OR BE SERVED? I. Matt. 20:17-28 The Kingdom of God Is a Kingdom of Servants. • Vv. 17-19 Jesus prophesied to his disciples his suffering & death. • Vv. 20-23Jesus’ disciples experienced personal ambition, envy, & strife. • Vv. 24-28 Jesus taught them to seek to serve, not to be served.

  12. Jn. 13:1-5 • 1 Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end. • 2 And supper being ended, the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him; • 3 Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God; • 4 He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself. • 5 After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.

  13. TO SERVE / OR BE SERVED? II. Jn. 13:1-20 The Master Is a Servant. • Vv. 6-11 He patiently served & taught: • Even men slow to learn. • Even men who wounded him.

  14. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me. • 9 Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head. • 10 Jesus saith to him, He that is washed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are clean, but not all. • 11 For he knew who should betray him; therefore said he, Ye are not all clean.

  17. Jn. 13:18-20 • 18 I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen: but that the scripture may be fulfilled, He that eateth bread with me hath lifted up his heel against me. • 19 Now I tell you before it come, that, when it is come to pass, ye may believe that I am he. • 20 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that receiveth whomsoever I send receiveth me; and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.

  26. TO SERVE / OR BE SERVED? A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh. IV. Lk. 6:45Our Use of Key Words Reveals Our Attitude. • “Help” • You people do not give me enough help. • How can I give more help to others? • “Hospitality” • You people do not show me enough hospitality. • How can I show more hospitality to others?

  29. Heb. 10:23-25 • 23 Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;) • 24 And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: • 25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

  30. TO SERVE / OR BE SERVED? V. Our Actions Express Our Attitude. • Heb. 10:23-25 Participation in Assemblies • Attendance shows love for each other. • Excuses given for absence: “I do not get anything from the services.” “Someone offended me.” “The people are not friendly.” “I am bored.” • Absence, excuses show lack of love for others.
