  1. What Exactly Is a Blog and How Do You Use It? A Brief Tutorial for Counselors and Teachers

  2. A Blog = A Web Log • A blog is a web site with information on a particular topic • The topic of the ETS/CTE blog is Postsecondary Education and Career Planning • Blogs also allow for current updates of information and user comments

  3. Resources at the Click of a Mouse • Students (and educators) can often feel overwhelmed by all the web-based resources available to help the transition from high school into adult life • Remember: More isn’t always better, sometimes it’s just more! • Our blog has been designed to provide easy access to the best resources currently available

  4. How Does it Work? • Counselors and teachers can use this blog to help guide students and provide them with: • Home Page Tab: • Personal development activities including E-portfolios, learning styles, and personality assessments • Announcements Tab: • Current events at the school, upcoming scholarships, job/internship postings, etc. • Careers Tab: • RIASEC career interest inventories, career exploration including Industry Pathways, internships, and resume/cover letter guides • Postsecondary Education Tab: • Educational options after high school including a sub-page with information about test preparation and college applications • Scholarships/Financial Aid Tab: • FAFSA tools, financial aid search sites, and how to set up scholarship profiles on the web

  5. Wait, There’s More… • The “For Educators” page can be accessed via a link in the left column of the blog • This page will provide you with information and resources related to: • The ETS/CTE grant collaborative • Externship opportunities for counselors and teachers • Industry Pathways Teams activities • Useful web links including E-portfolios for educators

  6. The Blog and Your School • The CTE/ETS staff can come to your school and deliver activities and/or workshops designed around any of the content in the blog • We can even bring our mobile laptop units into classrooms to ensure internet and blog access for your students

  7. We Want Your Input! • A blog is always a work in progress • Users can type directly into the “Leave a Reply” box included on each page to provide input and new links to try out • Counselors and teachers are encouraged to “Leave a Reply” or email rgill@frc.edu or schristensen@frc.edu with current announcements and suggestions of what you’d like to have included in the blog

  8. Help Make This Blog Your Own… We all have limited time and financial resources when it comes to helping students prepare for the future. This blog is free. It can be tailored to suit your needs and those of your students. Most importantly, the more we use it the better it becomes!
