  3. Developing Strategic Messages • Start by asking yourself questions • WHO? • Who are we? How are we perceived? How do we wish to be perceived? • WHAT? • What distinguishes your school? What makes it special? What are your goals? • WHY? • Why is this important, and why should it matter to our stakeholders?

  4. Create your own identity through a positioning statement. Ex: “St, John the Baptist Parish School District: A Top 10 School District in 5 Years.”

  5. Core Components for External Communications • Questions to Ask: • What is my Vision? • Who is my Audience? • What is the Content? • How should it be Distributed? • What is the Frequency?

Keys to Success • Have a clear mission • Be clear about school identity and direction • Have a plan • Be clear about what you want to achieve, set objectives, and develop a roadmap • Have a message • Be strategic • Be focused and consistent • Be smart: Understand target audience(s) and what motivates them • Have fun • Be creative; try new approaches • Use Social Media Platforms – Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Tweetdeck

  14. Create a Hashtag that Boosts your Brand Hashtags haven’t really taken off on Facebook - Twitter and Instagram both rely heavily on them. Hashtags can be used to find and connect with your target audience, generate conversation, and build your brand on social media sites. • Make it unique- Developing a cool hashtag that is already used by other schools will get you nowhere. A great tool to use is www.tagboard.com. You can type in any hashtag and find out how often it is used, whether it is used in a positive or negative way. • Keep it short – (12 of less characters) • Use it all the time - People will only start to use it in their own social posts if they know about it. INCLUDE IT ON EVERYTHING…….posters in the hallways, clothing, promotional items, use it on your email signature.
