  2. What it is…. • Is a poisonous plant in North America that produces urushiol. (a clear liquid found in the plant) • The urushiol causes itching, irritation, and in some cases can cause a painful rash. • It will develop a rash that can become very itchy and irritated.

  3. What Skin is Effected.. • The urushoil must penetrate the skin to the dermis before showing any symptoms. • Thin skin is effected first and the urushoil spreads there first. • The blisters or rashes formed cannot be spread from itching. • Only the urushoil can cause the blisters by attacking the thinner skin.

  5. Causes • Poison ivy is caused by the urushoil found in the leaves, stems, and roots of the plant. • It is very sticky and easily attaches to clothes, skin, tools, and even your pet’s fur. • You can receive poison ivy from direct contact with the plant or even coming in contact with something that has touched the plant and has urushoil on it. • If you inhale the plant when being burnt, you can also get poison ivy rashes. • Not everyone gets poison ivy; 50% of people in contact with the plant will. • It cannot spread by itching the rash or blister.

  6. Cure for Poison Ivy • Many over the counter medicines are sold to treat poison ivy. • Hydrocortisone is the main cream used. It is applied to the skin and depending on the severity, will go away in a week or so. • It is typically a self-care treatment but if the rash and blisters are very severe, then a doctor may prescribe prednisone or an oral antibiotic.

  7. Worst Case Scenario • Depends on how allergic you are to poison ivy. • Highly Allergic • Hives • Dehydration • Fatigue • Rashes over entire body • Lightly Allergic or Non-Allergic • Typically goes away by medicine and does not become severe. • Is easy to get rid of

  8. 3 Facts • Rashes cannot be contagious even when itched. Once the rash is on the skin, that is where it will remain unless touched by more plants. • Poison always grows with three leaves. Any plant that has 3 leaves should be seen as poison ivy and would be advised to stay away from. • Poison ivy can also be used as a medicine by extending our awareness.
