  3. על פירות האילן הוא אומר בורא פרי העץ On fruit that grows on trees, we make borei pri ha-etz

  4. Not so fast... THERE’S AN EXCEPTION TO THE RULE!

  5. חוץ מן היין שעל היין הוא אומר בורא פרי הגפן Even though grapes grow on the tree, we make borei pri ha-gafen on wine.

  6. Why is wine an exception to the rule? Predict!

  7. Wine is special • Wine is made from grapes – but has a special bracha rishona, since it is used for special occasions: • Kiddush, Havdalah, Weddings • The special bracha rishona shows that it has a special “status”

  8. TOPIC #2: ועל פירות הארץ, הוא אומר בורא פרי האדמה We make borei pri ha-adama on food that grows in the ground

  9. Not so fast... THERE’S AN EXCEPTION TO THE RULE!

  10. חוץ מן הפת, שעל הפת הוא אומר המוציא לחם מן הארץ Even though grains grow in the ground, we make a special blessing on bread: Ha-motzi lechem min ha-aretz.

  11. Why is bread an exception to the rule? Predict!

  12. Bread is special • Bread is used to show that a meal has special significance: • Shabbat, Yom Tov, Seudat Mitzvah • The special bracha rishona shows that it has a special “status” • We also recite a special bracha acharona after eating bread • Birkat HaMazon
