Expanded Form • Expanded form- a sum of the all of the digits’ place value 9.8 We have a 9 in the ones place and an 8 in the tenths place 9(1)+8(1/10)= 9+.8=9.8 19.875 We have a 5 in the thousandths place, a 7 in the hundredths place, an 8 in the tenths place, a 9 in the ones place, and a 1 in the tens place 1(10)+9(1)+8(1/10)+7(1/100)+5(1/1000) 10+9+.8+.07+.005=19.875

Place Value and Decimals 415.856 • Standard Form: 415.856 • Word Form: four hundred fifteen and eight hundred fifty six thousandths • Since we have decimals we use the word “and” to represent the decimal • To write which part is the decimal we emphasize the “ths”; this symbolizes a part of a whole • Expanded Form: 4(100)+1(10)+5(1)+8(1/10)+5(1/100)+6(1/1000)
